Re: The doctrinal establishment of a Chinese Buddhism: TianTai and HuaYan schoools
Phenomena are only manifestations of the mind, which is the one, all-encompassing, absolute mind, the Buddha-nature. It is a metaphysical or ontological thinking of the mind, according to the Chinese TianTai and HuaYan Buddhism. I believe Zhiyi disagreed with the 'mind first' aspect of yogacara, in...

Re: Spanish books by "Maestro Myoren"
Myoren left SGI and is now working very hard to create a traditional and official Tendai Sangha in Peurto Rico. He is receiving official training at the North American HQ for Tendai, Mt Hiei approved. So, personally, I can't see how his work and his sangha can be said to be "another nichiren-ne...

Re: Tantric Art and Meditation
I'm sure there must have been such studies done in Japan, given their penchant for scholarship. However I don't know of them. Jikai sensei may be a better person to answer.

Re: Responsibilities of Western Priests.
^^ this ^^ Hi Varis, Sorry it has taken me so long to give a reply. The answer depends on a few things. For example, what lineage you come from; simply put who your teacher is. They will have their own way of approaching those responsibilities. In Japan there is the blue-print if you l...

Re: Tantric Art and Meditation
Not sure if anyone can answer... When do the rituals described in Michael Saso's Tantric Art and Meditation date from? To be honest, I don't really know. From what little I know these rituals originate in India, and then moved to China. I'd imagine there were some minor additions made to these ritu...

Re: Is punishment of children required?
This thread got me thinking, and I was talking with my mum about it at the weekend. She said to me that she never had to discipline me and my brothers as kids and we were all good... however I remember (and reminded her) of the amount of times she'd slap us across the legs, and the times she'd shout...

Re: Is punishment of children required?
those who also do not believe in discipline and boundaries I often wonder if its actually just a form of neglect. Some cases, maybe. But I think others have been so hurt by their parents that they can't separate discipline, boundaries and consequences from violence, anger, hatred etc. But I honestl...

Re: Is punishment of children required?
I'm also amazed at the amount of people who feel discipline = violence, hitting and anger. It is possible to discipline a child without resorting to these.

Re: Is punishment of children required?
One of my neighbours do not believe in discipline and boundaries. They let their children climb (and often break) other people's cars. They've thrown mud balls at peoples walls and windows. They've gone through the trash and thrown it around the road. They've even stolen my daughters toys a few time...

Precisely Lukeinaz. if they've been naughty. They sit in time out, even when out and about. More importantly, they get treats for good behaviour and no treats for bad behaviour. what is "naughty". i mean in terms of buddhism, do you mean self-centered? Not in terms of Buddhism, whatever th...

Re: Is punishment of children required?
Every child is different, every parent is different. Social environments, life at home, money etc all these things have an impact on the child and on how best to raise them. There is no one right way in my opinion and I admittedly roll my eyes when a parent is telling me I'm doing it all wrong. Alth...

Re: Mohe Zhiguan Study Thread 摩訶止觀 Part 1
I'm still plowing through my copy of the Maka Shikan so I'm a little bit behind, but catching up. So I may be quiet for a little while just yet. A million thanks to Rev Jikai Sensei for taking the time to do this for us. It is invaluable to all of us, not just us English speaking Tendai folk. Thank ...

Re: Samatha and vipassana in Seon
According to the Jogye Order's website, the Seon master Choui Uisun practiced shamatha and vipassana (jigwan) for 40 years and advocated the practice of jigwan and studying scriptures alongside Seon practice. From what I understand jigwan practice comes from Tiantai. Does anyone know more about thi...

Re: Many Practices in Tendai, but for Whom?
Not entirely. It depends where we draw the line between esoteric and otherwise. The Tiantai tradition did absorb esoteric practices in China over the centuries which are esoteric. A good example of this would be the Hungry Ghost Rites(施餓鬼供養) which developed in the Song period. It is true that these...

Re: Tiantai Meditation
To clarify a point, if I may; Zhiyi did not receive transmission in Ox-head Chan, as the school didn't exist at that time. The school was founded by Niutou Farong 牛頭法融 (594-657). Zhiyi (538-597) may have known Farong's teacher, Dayi-Daoxin (580-651), but I can't find anything to support this, and Da...

Re: Many Practices in Tendai, but for Whom?
Does China's Tiantai today have the esoteric tradition like Japan's Tendai? No. The esoteric aspects were added by Saicho and then further by the likes of Ennin and others in Japan. I don't know what Tiantai is actually like in China these days, as I've heard mixed reports. Some tell me its no diff...

Although not Makashikan, here is a case in point of a Tendai priest in Japan teaching lay people to meditate. Whilst not the norm I am encouraged by his endevours
