Re: Hello, new one here from Jefferson State, Southern Oregon
Any time somebody would say something like "I am confused..." someone would post "Who is it that is confused?" As if this is some deep profound insight. Like I said, I have heard this for 20 or so years at least and am quite sick of the empty spiritual cliches. Ah, but who is it...

Re: Yogacara and dzogchen
...it seems strange reading this because everything else you've written seems to contradict Mipham, who asserts that external objects are projections of a perceiving mind which is not truly established. There is no contradiction, external objects are not establish on their own side as essence/body,...

Re: Yogacara and dzogchen
From the text that Sönam was kind enough to share, it seems that relying on Mipham for an accurate account of the dzogchen view in some of his writings may prove to be problematic... So you rather believe in the opinion Jean-Luc Achard, someone who has no known authority in the dzogchen nor having ...

Re: Desire
I would say that its beneficial to learn to seperate desire from its object - the fact that the fantasy and the reality are distinct. All forms of meditation on the nature of phenomena should help to "see-through" the reality. I can't say for sure, but at some level you know what it is you...

Re: The Four common preliminares
I do a practice with the four mind turnings at the start of each sitting. I also think it is important to see how they all fit together into one view. So it's like... firstly this precious human birth which gives us the opportunity to practice the dharma for all mother sentient beings - I visualise ...

Re: Categorical imperative and buddhism
For me, this raises a number of issues. I know the Kantian imperative does not say this, but I have encountered many "Buddhists" who try to universalise in reverse. The kind of rationalisation where someone says to themselves, the car is empty, the self is empty, so they won't mind us borr...

Re: Why did you choose Buddhism?
After I lost my faith in some of the less subtle aspects of Christianity (around the age of 12), I became interested in Philosophy and Theology, and Buddhism was the only path which offerred a practice in keeping with the philosophies that I was attracted to.

Just to check, is this correct, Joyti? 6. = Ideation-consciousnes 意識 (Tibetan: yid-kyi rnam-shes), the aspect of mind known in Sanskrit as citta or manovijñāna, the "mind monkey"; the consciousness of ideation 7. = Manas consciousness (Sanskrit: klistamanas = klesha; Tibetan: nyon-yid rna...

Re: Yogacara and dzogchen
We would have to believe we could think our way out of this riddle. I'm not sure to which 'riddle' you refer. But, recall that Buddha, in Sanskrit, is a form of bodhi (intellect). I've always wondered why that term doesn't get used more often in English translations, as you do see forms of bodhi in...

True, but how useful is it in this context? We would have to believe we could think our way out of this riddle.viniketa wrote:the point is, it may not be a 'bad' translation, per se.

I'm not sure about Jyoti's translation of Dudjom Lingpa, but mine reads, "You will reach the decision that there is no demon other than conceptualization (nam-tog)" Which mental function does one use to discriminate in order to make decisions? :namaste: Hahahahaha! Touche! Nice reply! :to...

Hi Jyoti. When I read through your posts there are certain phrases that I understand and certain phrases that I have no hope to understand. For example in your last post you use the phrase 'internal field of the imaginary nature.' You use a lot of these types of phrases in your posts. Are you aware...

Re: Addiction recovery
Ah, I see. I had no idea that AA was a Christian thing. Maybe naming the Buddha, or the triple gem (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) as your higher power is a good idea and will give some equivalence. As for letting people know that you are an ex-alcoholic - it would seem a good idea in certain social settin...

Re: Yogacara and dzogchen
Both here (page 2 of this thread), and elsewhere you have claimed that "skillful means" are somehow inferior to "definitve meaning". Isn't it the Dzogchenpa who claim their path to be beyond cause and effect? Skillful means for what in that case? Your vehicle is beyond concepts,...

Re: Yogacara and dzogchen
It is clear in the scriptures that the tantra's skillful means has hidden intention, therefore is considered non-definitive. But this does not mean one cannot practice tantra, nor implied that one should reject this scripture explanation, rather one should be aware that he is only practicing the pr...
