Re: Monkey Mind

I have talked to a teacher in person about this, and he just told me the samething as the frist time I met with him. "Concentrate on your breathing." Quite frankly, I was looking for a little more instruction then that. That sort of answer, and your reaction to it are not uncommon. Someti...

Re: Please welcome Henry to the team!

Hi all, I really don't know what to tell you, except that Dharma Wheel has been up and functioning for over a year now, and we've been doing just fine. In fact hardly any threads have needed moderation; people here seem to play nice. I'm not aware of any biases towards sects on the part of the mode...

Re: Please welcome Henry to the team!

I hope this thread isn't locked because of the NKT mention, the thread really isn't about NKT, it's about baseless accusations and dictatorship that E-sangha was well known and was destroyed for. Same here. It is my opinion and my opinion ONLY that we lost e-Sangha for those reasons. The site going...

Re: Lioncity forum

If from what I heard was correct, and there was a data loss issue, then I find it highly doubtful unless the owner wants to hire a data recovery specialist....and that takes into account that the server that the information was stored on is still intact and not in use. Probably. However, data loss ...

Re: Pictures of Green Tara or the 21 Taras

This is what I think is a very lovely portrayal of White Tara. I know this is a tad off-topic but I'd like to share it.

It was done by the Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje

I hope he does a Green Tara someday.

Re: Prayer to the Bodhisattva Manjushri

Supplication to Manjusri I protrate to the Bhagavat Manjusri. Your mind is completely pure and luminous, like the sun free of the clouds of the two obscurations; You hold a text at your heart, since you see all the variety of objects just as they are. You love like your only child all the multitude ...

Re: Using a Mala

My thinking on Malas is that first and foremost, Malas are counting tools. The material used may or may not be important. The merit accumulated may or not be affected by manner of use or material used. One type of bead may be more useful for some practices and not for others, or it may not make any ...

The Survival of American Buddhism

I'm listening to a 15 minute podcast on Buddhist Geeks - an interview with Acharya Judith Simmer-Brown on the Survival of American Buddhism. It's well worth a listen. Ms. Simmer-Brown states that there are four factors that will determine whether or not Buddhism will take hold in North America. Thos...

Re: Getting to Lotus Pose

We must remember that westerners are not used to these positions. These postures were comfortable for those used to the seating customs of their own culture from childhood. I read somewhere that a westerner's inability to use a Lotus posture has something to do with the kind of shoes we wear. Our s...

Well, now for My Tale of Woe.

I started doing that stretching excercise last night.

Compared to the people demonstrating in the video, I have a very long way to go. A VERY long way. :tantrum:

Re: From Theravada to Tibetan

This seems like the right place to post but apologies if not. My practice is almost entirely Theravada in terms of praxis and aspiration but I have practiced with and drawn much inspiration from the Vajrayana schools in the past. A lama here in NYC who is a member of the Sakya lineage and with whom...

Re: Getting to Lotus Pose

Here's a really great video that explains the anatomy involved in the pose and what stretches to do to prepare for it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USAeDzIbM5M&feature=related" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I like it! I've always had trouble getting to a full lotus. ...
