Re: Origin of mahayana

I believe it is distilled from the observed cause and effect of Shakyamuni's enlightenment.

Was Shakyamuni just an arhat?

Re: How to Deal w/ Constant Nagging?

As we age and as parent's of adult children our concerns and capacities might be subject to change. Her nagging is indicative of her own suffering. If you can sympathize and become compassionate it may relay back to her. As a parent I think a child's compassion goes a long way to soothing issues eve...

The Wonderful Means of Surmounting Obstacles If we examine the essential and the theoretical teachings of the Lotus Sutra, we see that the theoretical teaching maintains, as before, that the Buddha first attained enlightenment during his present lifetime; therefore, obstacles still beset the teachi...

Re: What is the best way to handle insensitivity and indifference?

Embrace the practice because the process you are experiencing is it working

nichiren discusses the signs of disease such as discomfort are actually signs that is being healed because those signs are part of the process

which if it wasn't working wouldn't be experienced

On Flowers and Seeds - Keka Joju Gosho - I have not heard from either of you since that time. But I was very pleased to learn that you read at Kasagamori the two letters I wrote in the Kenji era in memory of the saint Dozen-bo. If a tree is deeply rooted, its branches and leaves will never wither. ...

Re: How do enlightened lay masters see the body?

From a Shravakayana point of view, the patikulamanasikara way of seeing things is accurate. But the Arhats and Pratekyabuddhas do not attain the same level of realization as the Bodhisattvas and Buddhas. You could say it is a limited way of viewing things. But for the purposes of ending rebirth for...

Re: Are there any schools of Mahayana or Vajrayana Buddhism that do not ascribe to the view that all is one mind?

does one mind need mean one big mind versus one mind meaning every mind is alike before thought arises?
one way it looks at it like everyone shares the same mind where in the other way looks at it like every one has the same foundational blueprint
seems a bit interpretative open

Re: Difficulty Leaving the House

I have struggled with similar challenges including social anxiety (which is a multi generational in my family) as well as receiving decades of treatment. Ironically Buddhism was/is the most effective treatment for me. I would like to share that integrating dharma into your life need not come at a gr...

Re: Two Models of the Two Truths: Ontologicaland Phenomenological Approaches

This completely misunderstands what I mean when I say something is empty. When did I say something has no meaning because it’s empty? It’s precisely the opposite - something only has meaning because it is empty. When emptiness is discussed by my teachers, it has nothing to do with this null and voi...

Re: Post Truth World

Depends really. Dharma is like a really effective medicine, in the right hands it heals, in the wrong hands it is a poison. I am afraid that we might be slowly descending into more madness and confusion, not sure who to trust and more and more coming to wrong conclusions using our "brains"...

Re: What happens after suicide?

I have had to deal with the repercussions of suicide many times and it was a catalyst for me to understand buddhism. I have, had and will continue to make a conscious and even vocal effort (I asked buddha) to help me turn their karma into merit. Even if the karma left behind effects only me, I still...

Re: Two Models of the Two Truths: Ontologicaland Phenomenological Approaches

In regards to ontology and phenomenology, hermeneutics etc., In English, these terms help us to greatly appreciate and understand the nuances of Madhyamaka. Not for me. I think those who have read and studied Western traditions of philosophy find it useful. For me, it simply adds another set of tec...

Re: Vague but relevant article on the conseuqences of marijauna legalization

The article has no statistical relevance and legalization is a bit new to have established statistical evidence. Yes it's mainly anecdotal at this point, but when everyone who observing is seeing the same things anecdotally, it's worthy of consideration. Absolutely. I am not trying to invalidate th...

Re: Two Models of the Two Truths: Ontologicaland Phenomenological Approaches

Maybe this thread should be shifted to the tibetan forum? It has value from the perspective of proper use of ontological and phenomenological methodologies. It has great relevance in hard to understand writings especially ones with allegory and allusion. One of the points that is hard for many pers...
