Re: Advice for young buddhists

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to your younger self (or a younger person in general) at the start of your journey in Buddhism? That- where applicable- in my case happiness is a choice. I would paint everything black, and I could no longer darken my doors any longer. Misery lo...

Re: Renewable Energy

The current crisis seems to show that even more people are redundant and that quite a lot of people have the appearance of doing something important, or at least bear the rank of 'low-key'... At present many of us are finding new ways to occupy ourselves: renewing energy re-creationally! I mean if e...

Re: Predictions of Stephen Hawking

Ya well Hawking wasn't smart across the board; he was a theoretical physicist not a martial artist or an expert on interstellar colonialism. :alien: The E.T.s need only sit by the river long enough to see their enemies float past. I mean we are one minute to midnight, any man and his dog can see tha...

Re: Music time

DharmaNooB, That’s crazy, because that first MC Lyte track I posted just above sounds like your previous track yet with a slightly slower tempo and slightly different rhythm. I didn’t plan that even by a longshot. Things like that have happened a couple times or more in this thread  Sādhaka, ...

Re: How To Deal with Homeless People?

At one time I would ease my conscience by offering pennies here and there. If you get to know these people you get to know what they want so you can judge on a case to case basis. Consider that a lot of these people have mental health issues. Casualties of war and many that have suffered domestic ph...

Re: The Hardest Lessons.

I will add that no statement is nutty enough that everyone can be sure it was intended as a joke. (That's why sarcasm fails, of course.) I think that it was Lord Byron who once coined the expression that 'truth is stranger than fiction  Also that we have to remember that we are writing fo...

Re: The Hardest Lessons.

... humor does not really work well in online / cyber communications, so I have given up on it as well. I even had one my postings deleted by a former moderator here at DW (remember Gigoris?), at my failed attempt at humor regarding non-duality and non-binaries genders. It is very easy to cause mis...

Re: The Hardest Lessons.

Similar to your first point: the lack of visual or emotional cues. My primate mind doesn't like this very much.

I also do think that sarcasm doesn't register, why would it?

Another thing, it's easy to hide, so being authentic is even more problematic than 'IRL'

Re: Right Speech

Complaining about others suggests to me not establishing boundaries. We are to be firm and gentle. That means we stand for something so that we do not fall for everything. Another cliched expression is to say not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. That's like saying we do hold others dear, bu...

Re: My explanation of emptiness

Seems to me some traditions are tooled for certain eras and some teachings 1000's of years old teach according to the minds at the time and some of them become seemingly more abstract out of that context. Aha! You know I'm also tempted to evoke the parable of the blind men and the elephant ...

Re: My explanation of emptiness

"Money" and "valuables" have been mentioned by traditional Buddhist teachers as examples of emptiness. Money can suddenly lose all its value overnight, i.e. the value was not "real" or permanent. Do Buddhist teachers use the metaphor of debt as karma or debt with high levels of interest (usury) as ...

Re: My explanation of emptiness

An interesting example of 'emptiness' is "money". How does "value" arise in human society and human culture? Pieces of metal, or pieces of paper, have no intrinsic value. em, it's a representation or an I O U. :geek: Technically FIAT currency (let it be so) is not a rare object like gold. I think y...

Re: Exercise and weight loss - waste of time?

True Hazel, but mortality is also measured by degree of loneliness. Sum are imbued with beauty from the outset and struggle in desperation to keep attention. This isn't clear (or clearly sad) until one becomes of age or remains an ugly duckling.
