Why do some people find it hard to let go of the religion they grew up with?
While I do have faith in Nichiren Buddhism, I am finding it incredibly hard to let go of the faith that I grew up with. I'm sure there is some psychological reason for this but I'm wondering what to do. Do I just continue to chant everyday and hope that the instinctual pull towards my faith that I g...

Thank you for your insight. :namaste: Also, just because something in your life doesn't go the way you hoped it would, doesn't indicate that your practice isn't generating merit. Nor does it mean that bad things won't happen to you. Often, what we are given are opportunities to practice perseverance...

Re: Can you describe any situation since you have started chanting where you have been protected?
Interesting. Nothing quite like that happened to me. A friend was being mugged by two men. One grabbed him from behind and started choking him out. He chanted daimoku. One of the men heard it and said, "Yo, that's the shit my sister says. Let's get out of here." They let him go and ran. Later at the...

Re: What did Nichiren think of Confucianism and Shintoism?
Thank you! Gassho Thank you for that insight! Would there be anything wrong with practicing Confucian ideals or incorporating Confucian advice into daily life, as a Nichiren Buddhist? Not at all. Jen and Li are wonderful ideals, IMHO. There is a lot of great advice in the Analects . There's nothing ...

Re: What did Nichiren think of Confucianism and Shintoism?
Thank you for that insight! Would there be anything wrong with practicing Confucian ideals or incorporating Confucian advice into daily life, as a Nichiren Buddhist? "Cofucianism" for Nichiren was more expansive than just the teachings of Confucius. It also included Mencius as well as Daoism. He con...

How did your life improve after converting to Nichiren Buddhism?
I have been struggling to let go of Christianity because I have so many doubts and because I feel like it doesn't allow me to be myself and live my life. I'm also gay and I tend to look at the gay culture and see the problems within it through the lens of the religion that I grew up in. I'm in a rea...

Should a mother who is emotionally neglectful and indifferent be honored on Mother's day?
So my mother has just never really been there for me throughout my life in the way that I needed her to be. She has always been indifferent and distant and also abusive and/or allowed my step father to abuse me. Yet, she wonders why I haven't seen her in over 15 years. She doesn't want to talk about...

That's all I needed was a face value reply lol I appreciate that. You've given me much to chew on. But what if reaching out to this person is harmful to us? I don't know for sure. It's something you need to figure out. You may need to consult a mental health professional to help sort your feelings. ...

Re: How do we deal with a loved one who is selfish, narcissistic and insensitive to our feelings?
I appreciate that. You've given me much to chew on. But what if reaching out to this person is harmful to us? One of the core teachings of ichinen sanzen is our deep connection to the beings and environment around us. When we change at the deepest aspect of our lives, our mind (ichinen), we are tran...

How do we know when it is time to separate ties from certain people in our lives?
I recently stopped reaching out to two members of my family who've made no efforts to have much to do with me. They insist on giving me a litany of excuses as to why we're not close, putting it all on me. Nothing I say is heard and in fact, I feel like i'm constantly being gaslighted. So that's why ...
