Compassion Institute Online Classes

The Compassion Institute at Stanford University is offering online classes. Thubten Jinpa, former translator for HH Dalai Lama, played an instrumental role in developing the class. I really enjoyed his book "A Fearless Heart", much of which focuses on providing readers with many of the essential poi...

Re: Compassion

I recommend finding a good loving kindness meditation (metta practice). Sharon Salzberg is good; but there are many online if you do a search; there's even one by the doll Barbie that Sharon Salzberg shared on her page. It's actually good, though it's pretty funny to see Barbie guiding meditation: h...

Re: What is the cause of desire

I just listened to a lecture where the dharma teacher said that dualistic fixation or dualistic clinging is the root cause of suffering; perhaps this is the cause of desire. We cling to the sense of I which keeps us cycling in duality; seeing things as "I" vs. "others" and then we develop attachment...

Re: Did the Buddha teach against killing a being quickly out of mercy?

I agree that life is generally too complex to make a lot of cut and dry decisions. There are many factors that come into play in making any decision. For example, it is easy to say that abortion should be outlawed completely, but if you look carefully at the issue and examine all viewpoints, it is e...

Re: Suffering & Goals

I just took a Mindvalley masterclass with Srikumar Rao, a business school professor and philosopher. In the class, he talks about what the purpose of a goal really is: to get us is the direction we're trying to go. He says that it's important to set a stretch goal: a goal that is going to take some ...

Re: Great Compassion Mantra

Norden I had no expectations when I went into reciting the mantra. I didn't have any ideas of what would happen or if anything would happen. It is my belief that the Great Compassion mantra helps one make connections to various Bodhisattvas; who can then aid the one who is reciting it.

Tomorrow is paranirvana of Chagdud Tulku

Tomorrow (Nov 17th, 2002) is the paranirvana of Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche. Chagdud Tulku was a ritual master and a master of Dzogchen; in his autobiography he chose to forsake the traditional namtar (biography) where lamas were presented as spotless, spiritually perfected beings. He spoke of a childhoo...

If the above links don't work, you can just go to youtube and type in HE Choden Rinpoche Holy Transition Sept. 2015 and it should come up. I have found that you might have to refresh the browser 2 or 3 times, but (eventually) it should work.
