Re: Problem: Threads not registering as read, etc...

Seems to be working properly for me at this point, after several weeks of needing to manually "mark forums read"...

Re: Problem: Threads not registering as read, etc...

My problems have returned. I have to manually set the forum as read (i.e. thereads do not get marked as read).

Anyone else still having these issues?

Re: Problem: Threads not registering as read, etc...

OK, I used the "mark all forums read" option and at least in this thread it knows I've read the last post. Just have to wait for someone to post again to test...

Problem: Threads not registering as read, etc...

I'm having some difficulty with how the board is keeping track of threads for me. Normally, threads with unread posts have an orange square on the left of the thread title, and clicking on that takes you to the first unread post. For a day or two: 1. Clicking on the square takes me to the first post...

Re: Is there anyone home?

... Interestingly, when confronted with direct questions about the metaphysics of the self, the Buddha often chose to maintain silence. A famous example is found in the Ananda Sutta: Having taken a seat to one side, Vacchagotta the wanderer said to the Master, "Now then, Venerable Gotama, is there ...

Re: Question of Questions of King Milinda

Hi Bhadantacariya, As I'm sure you're aware, the questioning is aimed at the concept of self, which is clear from what precedes it, and by the sutta quote embedded into it: You say that you are called Nāgasena; now what is that Nāgasena? Is it the hair?” “I don’t say that, great king.” “Is it then ...

Re: When did "mindfulness" become "mindfulness"?

As has been pointed out by two posters already, use of "mindfulness" as a translation of "sati" goes back to the earliest translations of the Pali Canon, back in the mid to late 1800s. This is easily verified from the links given above and and a quick scan through translations published over the pas...

Re: Why theravada reject mahayana sutra

Hm, thanks for the compliment but I´m still a basic learner. In my understanding, "true Buddhists" don´t have this separation between traditions (never been on Dhamma Wheel). Dharma Wheel and Dhamma Wheel are owned by the same guy. He gave us two different sandboxes to play in so the children would...

Re: Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism

Thanks for the clarification, Venerable. I was thinking of people I have come across personally, such as expat kiwi Paul Harrison (now at Stanford) and comments I've read or heard from American academics who are practitioners. It did seem that the situation was rather different in Asia, but perhaps ...

Re: Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism

It is interesting that there seem to be a lot of "amateurs" (non-academics) who have a lot of knowledge that the western academic community doesn't seem to have much of a grasp of. A big difference between Buddhist studies in the West and other areas, such as science or engineering, is that the acad...

Some comments from Shi Huifeng, who was happy to have his Facebook "first impressions" reproduced. Hi flowerbudh, You might find the talks by Ajahn Vayama, a Theravada Nun in Western Australia, interesting. She was Abbot of the Nuns' Monastery there until 2011. I've always found her talks inspiring. http://www.dhammaloka.org.au/downloads/itemlist/category/36-ajahn-vayama.html Some of the talks ar...
