Re: Atheism vs Buddhism (was Non Cultural Buddhists: What Made You Stay?)

If that’s your understanding of the Lotus Sutra you have completely mangled it’s meaning. You should also bear in mind that the majority of Buddhists do not consider that sutra as superseding all others. But that’s not a necessary point here. You avoid my specific questions and attack my character ...

Re: Atheism vs Buddhism (was Non Cultural Buddhists: What Made You Stay?)

What about the dependence of buddhism on Brahmanism as the basis, cause and means for Shakyamuni? Citations please. Life span among many others chapter of the lotus sutra among literal dozens of references elsewhere in the sutra. Falsify it and you have an argument. Shakyamuni also says denying tha...

Re: Atheism vs Buddhism (was Non Cultural Buddhists: What Made You Stay?)

There is a subtle bias against abrahamic religion. This seems to really mark the western buddhism yet the function and nature go unnoticed. It's surreal. I missed this gem until Bristollad highlighted it. Of course there is a bias in the Buddhadharma against Abrahamic religions. We think that they ...

Re: Non Cultural Buddhists: What Made You Stay?

Put another way, I've stayed because I see the practices work. :good: This should really be the only correct answer. If the practices are not working, we're either not doing them, or doing them wrong. If we're calling ourselves buddhists but not practicing, in what sense are we really buddhists.

Re: Atheism vs Buddhism (was Non Cultural Buddhists: What Made You Stay?)

Here is were the atheist theorem really falls apart. Causation. Health sciences measure the duress imposed by mental distress. Mental distress is often rooted in delusional thinking. Illusions are real enough that they trigger stress which manifests into disease. Physiologically speaking the mindse...

Re: Atheism vs Buddhism (was Non Cultural Buddhists: What Made You Stay?)

to quote Bob Thurman "so don't tell me buddhists are atheistic" Note he remarks throughout he has made recent observations in regards to practices. Nice to see his isn't blinded by provisional. I watched a minute or so from the point you linked. Not going to watch two hours of youtube, though if yo...

Re: Non Cultural Buddhists: What Made You Stay?

I’ve always wondered, since the biblical (abrahamic) god describes himself as having anger and jealousy issues, whether Buddhists would classify ‘him’ as an asura. YHVH was a derivative of the common-or-garden tribal sky-god whose worship was mostly the usual sacrificial / ritual purity practices. ...

Re: Atheism vs Buddhism (was Non Cultural Buddhists: What Made You Stay?)

Many modern atheists have abandoned these definitions as they are very untenable philosophically. So instead of denying, they know "lack a belief." The second, however, is largely panned as centering on more modern, Westernized notions. Why can't everyone just acknowledge that there are two definit...

Re: Atheism vs Buddhism (was Non Cultural Buddhists: What Made You Stay?)

Why can't everyone just acknowledge that there are two definitions to the word atheism? 1) Disbelief in the existence of God or Gods. 2) Disbelief in the notion of a creator God. It's just a matter of preference for one or the other definition for the word. That’s not quite it. As I’ve said quite a...

Re: Non Cultural Buddhists: What Made You Stay?

1. The Dharma has nothing in common with the religions of Europe. The Dharma is profoundly atheistic, and values reason and experience over dogma. One essential common ground that all religions share is not necessarily the existence of a God but the existence of an ultimate authority that has speci...

Re: Non Cultural Buddhists: What Made You Stay?

You are the one displaying emotional attachment to this or that or to quote "honestly this is bs." Or perhaps I’m making an accurate assessment? This is a Mayahana forum for which the basis is Bodhisattva practices. So we should talk about what Mahayana teachings actually say. Not what we would lik...

I thought some fragments of postings were found in an Iomega drive written in Gandharan that proved that the earliest extant Dharmawheel postings actually predated the Dhammawheel postings?

Missing the point again. Let me know if you want to engage on the issue. What point am I missing? The last 2-3 pages of discussion on the meaning of the terms being used? And a few other things. Should I measure my delusion according to your disappointment with Bob Thurman? Rhetoric Atheism isn't a...

There's an awesome chan master in malaysia named 繼程法師 Jicheng Fashi (Master Chi Chern). He's the first Dharma heir of master Sheng Yen, the second being 果如法師 Guoru Fashi whose monastery is in Beitou area of Taipei.
