Re: The doctrinal establishment of a Chinese Buddhism: TianTai and HuaYan schoools
Though no Indian counterpart of the Tiantai and Huayan schools, both Chinese schools are basically Vijñānavāda in orientation, with an absolutist metaphysical twist. :buddha1: Tiantai was influenced by Vijñānavāda, but was far more influenced by Madhyamaka to the point where many will say that Tian...

Re: Tiantai Meditation
Anecdotally speaking, it's rather obvious that the "zhi" and "guan" aspects of meditaion in the seminal Tiantai texts are none other than the "shi" and "kan" of shikantaza the dual nature is also expressed in the words "Silent Illumination" - the seamlessness of this is rather underscored by the co...

Re: The doctrinal establishment of a Chinese Buddhism: TianTai and HuaYan schoools
Many thanks for your explanation. It seems that 一念三千 in TianTai and 一 真/一心法界 in HuaYan are connected with the idea of: the mind is all phenomena and all phenomena are the mind, but at the same time the mind is in a leading function, 一切唯心造. This would depend on what you mean by a 'leading function'....

Re: The doctrinal establishment of a Chinese Buddhism: TianTai and HuaYan schoools
Consider this from Tendai monk, Ven Annen; "Question: The Tendai School considers the Lotus [Sutra] to be the ultimate teaching.… However, if the Lotus Sutra is considered to be ultimate, then Esoteric teachings should be provisional. If Esoteric teachings are ultimate, then the Lotus Sutra should b...

Re: The doctrinal establishment of a Chinese Buddhism: TianTai and HuaYan schoools
Phenomena are only manifestations of the mind, which is the one, all-encompassing, absolute mind, the Buddha-nature. It is a metaphysical or ontological thinking of the mind, according to the Chinese TianTai and HuaYan Buddhism. I believe Zhiyi disagreed with the 'mind first' aspect of yogacara, in...

Re: Spanish books by "Maestro Myoren"
Myoren left SGI and is now working very hard to create a traditional and official Tendai Sangha in Peurto Rico. He is receiving official training at the North American HQ for Tendai, Mt Hiei approved. So, personally, I can't see how his work and his sangha can be said to be "another nichiren-new rel...

Re: Tantric Art and Meditation
I'm sure there must have been such studies done in Japan, given their penchant for scholarship. However I don't know of them. Jikai sensei may be a better person to answer.

Re: Responsibilities of Western Priests.
^^ this ^^ Hi Varis, Sorry it has taken me so long to give a reply. The answer depends on a few things. For example, what lineage you come from; simply put who your teacher is. They will have their own way of approaching those responsibilities. In Japan there is the blue-print if you l...

Re: Tantric Art and Meditation
Not sure if anyone can answer... When do the rituals described in Michael Saso's Tantric Art and Meditation date from? To be honest, I don't really know. From what little I know these rituals originate in India, and then moved to China. I'd imagine there were some minor additions made to these ritu...

Re: Is punishment of children required?
This thread got me thinking, and I was talking with my mum about it at the weekend. She said to me that she never had to discipline me and my brothers as kids and we were all good... however I remember (and reminded her) of the amount of times she'd slap us across the legs, and the times she'd shout...

Re: Is punishment of children required?
those who also do not believe in discipline and boundaries I often wonder if its actually just a form of neglect. Some cases, maybe. But I think others have been so hurt by their parents that they can't separate discipline, boundaries and consequences from violence, anger, hatred etc. But I honestl...
