Re: How to become Mahayana monk no more than 400 Dollars monthly budget
A lot of Mahayana monks in the U.S. work jobs. As a monk, you could get a part-time, subsistence level job and spend the rest of the time for practice. This seems like the most practical way of doing it. But what I heard, it can be difficult as well. A friend said, for him it was as if he had to li...

Re: Becoming a monk in the West?
An aquaintance of me had a job in a bureau. He saved money for about two years in order to have enough money to support himself. Now he is monk in France and he lives in a monastery. I don't know the exact address. It has the word Nalanda in it's name. It is gelug lineage and connected to FMPT. I wa...

"Pleased to meet you..." :sage: Buddha exemplified that by the correct and Highest Enlightenment at Gaya, that the nature of mara's "game" will no longer puzzle One! May the OP reach that and such Enlightenment swiftly, for the benefit of all sentient beings! Om. I think, you take that song too ser...

Re: Adding practices to your Sadhana
I really recommend following the guidance of your teacher. Trust him. If he says: "Don't be too picky about rules and better find your own way that fits to you", then this is the most wise advice he can give to you. Ngöndro is a longterm project and you really need some endurance and patience for it...

Re: Buddhist Morality
This problem sounds very artificial (construed). It's clear times changed and you cannot turn back the time of 200 years. Nevertheless the dept stays. Therefore the descendants of European immigrants should be aware of the fact they owe much. Therefore, they should treat the decendants of Native Ame...

Why not return it?
If I think of another example, e.g. stolen artworks, stolen by nazis from jews. Why not return it?
You don't need Buddhist view for this case at all. It is just common sense, or in other words it concerns 'secular ethics'.

Re: Is This A Tribal Site Or A Philosophy Site?
I moved the topic to Introductions, because
- it is your introduction, and
- I don't think we want to have a discussion about the discussions here.
Best procedure is you take a look and judge it by yourself.

Re: How To Evaluate A Teacher?
:good: ... Wouldn't the best evidence that a teacher can teach us how to be at peace in the real world be that the teacher themselves can do it? But how to evaluate that genuinely? What people are thinking about themselves and what picture they are giving may differ widely. Where is the source of th...

If anybody ever tells you to read only from one teacher and do not look what other's are saying, please then give them a wide berth.

Re: Experiences with spirits
My first spontaneous thought is: Let it be. Let it go. But this musn't be helpful. I would try to find a very good, decent, educated and open-minded therapist. Letting go/relaxing does not make this spirit go away. I will have done relaxation many times during my life and so obviously that is not t...

Re: The KLF, but Buddhists?
I think the key test of religious music is that it has to be good music first. There's oodles of great music dealing with Christian themes, but there's also dreadful "Christian Rock." Unfortunately, most of the modern Buddhist pop/rock/rap/etc. that I've heard just isn't that good--or at least, not...

Re: What happens BEFORE ngondro?
Generally Gelugpas don’t start people out with Vajrayana practices, which includes NgonDro. Then who introduces people in that tradition to Vajrayana? I may misunderstand your statement. It's not completely fixed how to proceed. Different teachers recommend different things. Getting familiar with t...

Re: A single sadhana or practice
Hello. Many of you have received multiple sadhana and practice empowerments; it seems some of you have received many indeed. I am just curious: if you were to restrict yourself to a single sadhana or practice, which would you choose and why? Yes, as the discussion above suggests, I belong to those ...
