Re: Kagyu Monlam live on FB- who is this lama?

You know, for such a big public event, they're really not screwing around with the teachings. I think of how many biggish public events I've been to where the teachers were nice but the teachings were just pablum. The crowd shots are amazing. And worldwide, fewer than 200 people watching the FB, jus...

Re: Kagyu Monlam live on FB- who is this lama?

I've been tuning into the live cast of the Kagyu Monlam on FB a little for the last couple of days, around 8pm Mountain Time- I don't speak Tibetan, who is this lama teaching? Not the Karmapa, he's maybe late 50's, wears glasses... ...Robes, shaved head... Benchen Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche. They have ...

Re: Beginner in Mahamudra

JD, I agree- he explicitly addresses this stuff in his books, which are all transcribed, translated public talks. [So a tremendous amount of overlap w all his other books; he'll lead w 4 thoughts, refuge, and bodhicitta. Then shamatha w, and possibly w/o, object; then a standard, "shedra cliff's not...

Re: Beginner in Mahamudra

I think it's tremendously silly that someone is asking about a book which involves Shamatha/Vipaysana and people are talking as if it's a restricted sadhana or something, even with the distinction in the material of "Mahamudra vipaysana" etc. Śamatha and vipaśyāna practiced according to the Mahāmud...

So can I practice the teachings of this book without a teacher?
Read it and find out.

If you go w Thrangu's Practice of Tranquility and Insight, that's good too- it's actually not an mm book, it's on the standard sutra-style shamatha and vipasyana. Very useful practices, complements a lot of other meditation practices you may have been exposed to. Lots of equivalencies w what we've s...

Re: Are Bonpos vegetarian?

Is there a vow to be vegetarian for Bonpos? Are such prominent teachers like Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche vegetarian? How it compares to Buddhism? I don't think it's super-common, but I don't really know. But I do know that an influential Bonpo lama from the late 1800s called Shardza Tashi Gyeltsen was a...

Re: Beginner in Mahamudra

What is the most complete and best introduction for beginners in Mahamudra? Essentials of Mahamudra by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche should be the one that is quite thorough but at the same time not too complicated. I'd recommend this one too. And folks, if Thrangu, or Gendun, or any other mahamudra ma...

Re: Conservative Christian group launches campaign against “Buddhist meditation” in public schools

Not much of a campaign at this point- the headline is a bit misleading. If you go to the ACLJ website, it's just an online petition and some boilerplate legal argument. They showed up at one meeting in CO. There's something maybe brewing in GA w yoga, and the yoga folks won one in CA last year. What...
