Re: Cost of retreats USA vs. EUR

Well, from what I hear from many Buddhists , this vajrayana has developed a bad reputation, for being for wealthy people, being very into making money. Are lots of these expensive things necessary. When I did three year retreat in Canada under Kalu Rinpoche it cost Ed 300 a month. What are people tr...

Re: gaze/open eyes/closed eyes

Not quite on topic but relevant- Thrangu says in one of his book that Mahamudra with eyes closed is fine. Can't remember which one, but I distinctly remember it because it was advice you don't often hear. For every practice rule there's an exception. It's enough to make you think that practice rules...

Re: gaze/open eyes/closed eyes

I go with open as it develops clarity a lot quicker. I too noticed ChNN with his eyes closed a lot during SoV etc.a lot. However I'm sure he was in a state that nor you and I could ever imagine. There is no way to judge just exactly what was arising for him. The one thing you can say for sure is th...

Re: gaze/open eyes/closed eyes

Anyen once told me, "No one ever attained mahamudra, ever attained dzogchen, practicing with eyes closed." Mingyur says eyes closed is fine for shamatha. Tsoknyi teaches eyes open for the most part but says you can test your rigpa by closing your eyes. Personally I think, how can you limit it to one...

Nearly everything we regard as dharma is an artifact of the economics.

Re: Sutras on Sexual Misconduct

So far I have mostly read Patrul Rinpoche who seems to be quite strict on the orifices, places and times of the day, however I am quite interested where this idea came from and what the Buddha had to say about it. I have heard that Gampopa and Je Tsongkhapa were of the same style. Are there some Ti...

Re: Sedona/Flagstaff

Garchen is a good idea. Sedona is notorious for faux- Buddhist cult nonsense tho so keep your head up. "Jetsuma" has a presence there or at least did. Maybe they've settled down and become good practitioners, but the stuff coming out 10-15 years ago made it seem highly skip-able, even if they did ha...

Re: Retreats in tb

I read here that Kalu Rinpoche "mostly slept" on his retreat. How is it possible to be on retreat and have assigned practices but neglect it? From what I know it seems that retreat can mean different kinds of things, not just plain sitting practices but apparently it all still is valid as "retreat"...

Re: I  Huckabees

To be clear, I just say "not a zen movie" specifically because (a) he has this thing where people knock themselves in the head and stop thinking for a second or two, and then chase that experience. Which is lame; and (b) he's doing the naturalist fallacy, where Jason Schwartzman is rooting on some p...

He did some sesshins w Eido at Dai Bosatsu.

Horrible movie, really terrible, not a zen movie at all imo.
American Hustle was good tho. Silver Linings Playbook was ok. David O. Russel is the guy's name.
