Re: Renewable Energy
I can do it all on renewables except heat and transport. But many of the things I buy, including solar panels, have insanely huge energy inputs and have limited lifespans. I'm getting very tired of their being only 2 allowable views on every subject. Heat and transport are only 70 to 85% of my annua...

Re: Tibetan Lamas and wealth
For many it is the family business. Basically you get an academic degree in Dharma and start earning. They put on an exotic show for the gullible. Then invent theories why capitalist Buddhism is OK. Which doesn't fit well with the Buddha who forbade his monks from touching money or owning property. ...

Renewable Energy
There were some necro threads where it was appropriate but they were all locked. Plus the documentary simply states what is obvious to anyone who has actually lived on solar. You won't be heating your home or driving your car on solar panels. *Edited by Mod. Removed meta discussion. Comments regardi...

This synchronizes with this entire philosophy of the status quo being amazing. His entire gimmick was late stage capitalism is amazing and you are a fragile snowflake for not being successful and bending the world to your will. All you need is gargantuan doses of clonazepam and life is a dream. He i...

Re: Corona conspiracy theories
Nemo, that’s absurd. How could something like that be possible in our well-regulated economy? It’s about as likely as, say, companies demanding money from the government in return for not firing workers, then handing that money to their shareholders and firing the workers anyway. Things like this s...

Re: Corona conspiracy theories
I have a crazy conspiracy that the rich are going to rob us blind since they were making their money from being over leveraged again. That some banks and rich people were leveraged over 15 times in the London Bond Market like in 2008. They did this by recollateralizing your money and investments mul...

Kids are calling it Boomer Remover. It specifically targets old men. It's also surprisingly gentle to children. Under 10 are basically immune. Almost like the world is trying to get rid of the thing that caused all the problems.

Re: Best way to print pictures for shrine?
Put it on a USB stick and drive to Staples works well. Costco has some sturdy frames you can order online. They are printed onto a hard board like material or one like a traditional flexible canvas that can then be framed like a painting.

Re: Selling the dharma
I don't think there is a clear winner here. Under some circumstances paying for teachings is good and in others they should be free. Some sentient being are dumb. They will walk by the river every day but they won't take drink till someone sets up a stand and starts selling it.

Re: A Manifesto Against the Enemies of Modernity
“Modernity” is the name for the profound cultural transformation which saw the rise of representative democracy, the age of science, the supersedence of reason over superstition, and the establishment of individual liberties to live according to one’s own values. At its core, it values empowering t...

Let's say that you've done some very unskillful actions in the past and now your karmic creditors are coming after you in dreams, trying to take your life. At the same time, they are threatening your family. Are there any prayers/ceremonies that can help protect your family? I have read that if spi...

Re: Buddhism's class "problem"
If you or others have the wealth and time to practice Dharma and donate to Dharmic causes: this is something to rejoice in. It's very hard to have the favourable conditions for practice: isn't that why there is danaparamita, mandala practices etc? Most of us need to accumulate more merit. Conversat...

Re: Buddhism's class "problem"
It’s undoubtedly the case that convert Buddhists in the UK are almost exclusively middle or upper class. Most are graduates. And most are white. I am not sure what if anything can be done about this. I don’t think it’s a matter of deliberate exclusion. The irony is so many of the old masters from T...

Re: How To Deal with Homeless People?
Tightening credit lowers housing prices, not building more units. How does that work? The only time prices went down was during the crash in '08. After that it wasn't great for a few years but then everything steadily increased again. Even with tightened laws on credit and lending. The quick answer...

Re: How To Deal with Homeless People?
The solution is ridiculously simple. Raise the property taxes on empty houses and use that money to build affordable housing. Then raise interest rates to reasonable levels to deflate the international housing bubble. Tightening credit lowers housing prices, not building more units.

Re: How To Deal with Homeless People?
There are only 22.6 empty homes per homeless person in America. Obviously the solution is to build more housing. *Yes, I'm cheating a bit by using official stats for the number of homeless which are lowballed in the extreme. It's probably only like 12 in America and maybe 15 in Canada if you include...
