Re: Dharma Quotes Thread

Knowledge is as infinite as the stars in the sky;
There is no end to all the subjects one could study.
It is better to grasp straight away their very essence—
The unchanging fortress of the dharmakaya.

Re: Tibetan institutional religous violence

Malicious gossip would suggest my stated concerns are baseless, whereas I can point to the case of Kalu Rinpoche and Bhutan where this issue is now in the public sphere, plus what I've heard around India and Nepal from multiple sources. "What I've heard" is central to the very definition of gossip,...

Re: Tibetan institutional religous violence

There is something very disturbing to me about the current climate of Tibet bashing. Especially since we never observe China bashing, Japan bashing, etc., on these boards. It's pretty sad, actually. We have the PRC, literally raping Tibet and sterilizing Tibetan women after forcing them to have lat...

Re: Tibetan institutional religous violence

What's scary here is Ven. Indrajala and the young Kalu RInpoche and the news have all talked about the reality of child sex abuse in Tibetan monasteries, and no one of importance has done anything about it…. You obviously do not know much about Tibetan Buddhism or the current situation with many of...

Re: New to Buddhism

Yes, welcome! I'd like to add my recommendation of The Dhammapada; What the Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula as I think it a concise, clear presentation of much of the foundation of Buddhist thought and philosophy. Very readable. Also Thich Nhat Hanh's books, especially perhaps his Living Buddha, Liv...

Re: Complete Togal Instruction in Unrestricted New Book

Lama Drimed's involvement in The Continuum Movement (what he's teaching at Esalen) is certainly not without raised eyebrows. Esalen has long been home to many east-west meetings, some quite complementary, others resembling head-on collisions.

Re: Complete Togal Instruction in Unrestricted New Book

They seem to be very nice people and have done a lot of practice. Perhaps it helps to keep an open mind. Doesn't matter. These practices can't be done without the direct teachings and transmission of a qualified guru who is holding the lineage and has realization in the practice. Publishing texts o...

Re: A closer look into empowerments

The entire email as a whole is a non-answer I think, because nowhere was the question of a recorded empowerment answered. . Yes, that's the point: the polite evasion of the question is the answer…. I've been around just enough Dharma centers to have seen this frequently, where a person wants to con...

Re: Alan Wallace on Dzogchen

Half an hour into it he mentions that Dudjom Lingpa never had a human teacher. :jawdrop: This is of course completely false. Just look on TBRC, you can see that Dudjom Lingpa was a disciple of a very prominent 19th century Gelugpa master , 'jam dbyangs thub bstan nyi ma. http://www.tbrc.org/#!rid=P...

Re: Validity of recorded empowerments

One cannot receive an empowerment from a recording of an empowerment. It simply isn't possible. Such a thing resembles the son of a barren women. You can talk about such a boy all you want, you can describe his hair, his abilities, his intelligence, his wit, grace and charm — but in the end, you ha...

Re: Validity of recorded empowerments

...We are discussing whether someone who watches recording of an empowerment actually receives it. Thus far, no one has been able to offer any sort of reasonable response to my objections about this. In my limited experience, the answer given to me is quite clear. Empowerments (using that term as i...

Re: Validity of recorded empowerments

Re: Validity of recorded empowerments

...If someone wishes to practice Vajrayāna, they should make the effort and sacrifice to go to where a teacher is present, receive an empowerment in a proper way , and if they cannot manage that much, then they should participate in a live online transmission of some kind. ... Re: Gorampa & Tsongkhapa

Sherab Dorje, how could using discriminating wisdom, practicing patience, and dealing with adversity not be a part of your practice? Then again this board is full of Mahayana and Vajrayana folks, so perhaps it is too hard to play the drum, ring the bell, chant the tune and type simultaneously. :) An...

Re: Gorampa & Tsongkhapa

DKR is clearly criticizing Tsongkhapa, but feel free to your own interpretation. LOL! If you think that was an insult, what would you consider a compliment? DKR is "clearly" doing whatever one perceives him to be doing. I see profound compliment and caution to the other three schools. You s...

Re: Validity of recorded empowerments

Fortunately, for students who have faith and confidence in the teachings of Garchen Rinpoche, it does not matter in the least what Malcolm has to say in disagreement with Rinpoche on an Internet forum. Malcolm is not a lineage holder, nor is he a representative of Garchen Rinpoche. I would remind a...

Re: Validity of recorded empowerments

Protectors are for those who have entered secret mantra in the proper way. If you do not have samaya, you do not need any sort of protector apart from the Three Jewels. I am really not certain at all that recorded empowerments have the necessary qualities to confer the stream of blessings. In fact,...
