Re: Cold Showers
For those with a scientific bent, here's a link to a controlled study in which some participants were coached by Hof. Very interesting results, not a large sample size and limited to healthy young (19-27) subjects, but nevertheless intriguing. Also interesting that meditators were excluded from the ...
Re: Zen Bug
Some quick googling came up with a book called Seeking the Cave: A Pilgrimage To Cold Mountain by James P. Lenfestey. It includes a reference to the Chinese character for "cicada" being made of the character for "Zen" plus the character for "bug." Several other sites referenced the sound of the cica...

Re: Obtaining a specific rebirth as a transgender
I can say that Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche is fully supportive of LGBTQ students. Citation or specifics please From the Tergar (Mingyur Rinpoche's organization) website in "Guidance on Tergar Code of Conduct" section: "Tergar is committed to making the teachings and community accessible to all. Acknowl...

Re: boring questions about losing weight
Interesting. I suppose bodies are different. I'm a grazer, rarely eat what others would call "a meal," total maybe 1200cal/day. Been vegetarian for 37 years with a tiny bit of lacto/ovo, do some cardio-type exercise daily, do yoga, physically active at home (gardening, moving firewood, etc). My body...

Re: boring questions about losing weight
I have been doing intermittent fasts continuously for more than 20 years now. I eat only once a day (every day except weekends) and feel no hunger during the day. I am now 60 years old and have the same weight I had when I was 20.... You didn't mention, but I am assuming you are not vegetarian? Als...

Re: Do any of you use social media to spread Dharma?
My only caveat would be, when you quote the Buddha or a text, make sure you quote accurately from a reliable source. Do a google search for "Buddha quotes" or "Dalai Lama quotes" and almost everything you find is new age BS.

Re: Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)
Yes, you would think that those opposed to abortion would get behind Planned Parenthood , an organization that actively works to prevent unplanned pregnancies, and thus abortions - but no, that's sacrilege as well. Every intercourse must be open to reproduction. Thus, funding for PP has been cut und...

Re: Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)
Pro life? Then let's work on abolishing the death penalty together, caring for people, making the loving society we all want. Let's do it. There is a non-partisan non-denominational group called Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth) that does just that. It promotes a "consistent life ethic" https://en.w...

Re: Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)
But taking up the logic of that line, riddle this... women outnumber men in the United States. If abortion were an issue that broke on sex lines, women should win that vote. It doesn't break that way because its not just a women's issue, I suspect. Its bigger than that. Or maybe smaller than that. ...

ETA The first video "Interview with Ponlop Rinpoche" is the one I'm referencing. Can't figure how to isolate it from the playlist, sorry.

Re: Trauma and the public mind
My impression is that it began in the public school system, maybe around the time when mainstreaming began. Children with widely varying abilities of all kinds started sharing classrooms; it became necessary to teach children that children who are otherly-abled, for lack of a better term, are still ...

Re: Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)
I really don't understand why this is such an issue in America, in particular. America operates on an underlying basis of Puritan morality, in which the totally natural human sex drive is subverted as dirty and immoral. This leads to the schizoid behaviors wherein we give lip service to so-called "...
