Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

The Buddha taught Bodhi. That's all. Everything else may be a means to that, but never equates with Bodhi. Only Bodhi is Bodhi. if you eliminate means is there ever a reason to understand bodhi? i.e. if all suffering is a product of the mind, and the mind is empty of suffering is there still means ...

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

Analogies can be validated through the capacities of one's own epistemological capacity coupled with due diligence. In this instance I offered that people might start with dissertations as it is a metric for scholarly merit. The first portion of statement remains, is compassion still compassion by ...

Re: Split from When the Monks Met the Muslims

As I understand it both Shakyamuni and Nichiren lived as examples of developmental perfection and it is reflected in the history of their discourse and within is revealed the dharma of the Lotus Sutra. When I think of this I think of Nichiren in his practices prior to the lotus school and considere...

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

But we are not talking here about the anecdotal actions of individuals: we’re talking about what the different doctrines actually say. We know that lots of catholic priests molest children. That doesn’t then imply that Catholicism as a religious doctrine encourages or requires this. In any case: I ...

Re: Split from When the Monks Met the Muslims

Thank you for the correction I while I feel I understand I still have contention in my mind based on the opening of the eyes and my interpretations of his writings and his life in general. This is not to diminish what you posted but rather to reveal my intent. In my mind i reconciled the filial teac...

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

there is a philosophical discussion that can aid this outside of any school or religious teaching and it is about the nature of perceived reality and it begins with simple questions? 1) What are the impetus of belief? 2) Is there a benefit to belief outside religion? 3) what does this reveal about t...

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

One of them has a creator god, an immortal soul, no reincarnation, sin. The other has pratityasamutpada, anatman, karma. We could go on but the distinction here is sufficient - this is a gap that cannot be closed by posting some deeper meaning, unless you posit that one side is a provisional teachi...

Split from When the Monks Met the Muslims

The view matters. Yes. One thing about the Lotus - it does not suggest that the teachings taught in accord with conditions actually themselves lead to bodhi. They may accomplish some beneficial purpose - getting children out of the burning house, letting weary travelers rest, preparing a poor man t...

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

There is a great irony that exist that have observed. Many people when they experience another person's belief judge the object of that belief based on that person's interpretation. The only way that would logically have any basis for benefit is if all objects of belief where interpreted exactly the...

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

One grand example that comes to mind is of the black man who has convinced 100's of KKK members to leave the KKK simply by engaging them compassionately. https://www.npr.org/2017/08/20/544861933/how-one-man-convinced-200-ku-klux-klan-members-to-give-up-their-robes in the short compassion may be the...

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

In my experience the god of Abraham and the peoples who believe are grossly misrepresented and misunderstood even by those who believe and worship. For me the deepest meanings of those texts and the deepest meanings of the buddha's teachings (I base this on my interpretive of the lotus sutra) have ...

In my experience the god of Abraham and the peoples who believe are grossly misrepresented and misunderstood even by those who believe and worship. Deist is as deist does. True enough but I don't think that irony is exclusive to deists but rather is an aspect of the human condition that can...

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

Neonazis ruin everything. Indeed, they can't do anything right. I had misgivings about the Koran and the history of Islamic intolerance decades ago. It was fine to have a critical and unromanticized view of Abrahamic religions back then. Then the neonazis and fascists had to jump on board and demon...

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

One thought about the original article that does come into question for me and it is in the form of rethinking stereotypes

In my mind stereotypes seem to be a facet of the mind that is meant to be abandoned not reconsidered although the article is challenging q bias that only ingrains this dynamic.

Unless the proof is only accessible in a foriegn and yet to be translated language isn't the information presented subject to scrutiny through the use of due diligence easily via a Google search, including scholarly articles?

Searching the timeline of nalanda itself yields a wealth of data.

Re: Buddhism, and theistic religions.

At the moment I'm reading 'The Teaching of The Buddha', produced by Bukkyō Dendō Kyōkai. It talks about the Eternal Buddha, there where many concepts that seemed impossible to grasp that years later make total sense to me and this is one of those From a Mahayana POV if everyone has a latent buddhis...

Re: Buddhism, and theistic religions.

There are parallels in all belief that reveal the true dimension of the human condition and experience Belief of all kinds have some very common themes in regard to the human condition and experience The buddhism I practice puts them into context of the ten realms, the pervasiveness of which comfort...
