Re: "Instant presence"

If there is a watcher, clinging to the state, a blockage for things to arise or dissolve, then it's almost certainly alaya. Mipham's A Lamp to Dispel Darkness is a wonderful text on this. http://www.lotsawahouse.org/tibetan-masters/mipham/mipham-lamp When you leave your mind in a state of natural re...

Re: Mahamudra and Dzogchen

Dzogchen is like being thrown into the deep end of the pool. Mahamudra can be much more step-by-step. I also find that a continuing study of Madhyamaka has been extremely useful. The way I differentiate the two for myself is that Mahamudra is from the bottom up, and Dzogchen, for the most part, is ...

Re: Mipham Rinpoche channels Weinstein:

The supreme vajrayana guru is a fully ordained monk. This is taught very clearly in tantras such as Kalacakra. Westerners are enamored of upasaka gurus, the most inferior kind, with predictable results. How do you square this with the fact that your main teacher is a lay person? Just a reminder: mi...

Re: Scary Liberal Views and Policy Positions?

How exactly do define 'fascist'? a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fascism as well as a tendency toward ruthless protection of the status quo with the possibility of violence. Then examine the history of civil...

And it's still ongoing. It's also something which was going on at least in the 80s, mainly affecting the British Sikh and Hindu communities. See, for example, the work by The Sikh Awareness Society.

Re: Scary Liberal Views and Policy Positions?

Yet the rape of over 1400 girls in one town alone was the consequence of decisions made by mainly members of a Labour council as well as progressively minded decison makes within social services, media and the police. Ummmmm... I do believe the rapists had something to do with it? Yes. But it was k...

Re: Scary Liberal Views and Policy Positions?

As for my example, well, maybe have a look at the Birmingham mass sexual abuse scandal. Overzealous progressives have it on their hands, where even the police were afraid of doing their job properly. This is of of many disasters that are symptomatic of the loss of perspective and common sense in th...

Re: "Instant presence"

I think that ChNN coining the term “instant presence” refers to a Londge teaching of Garab Dorje that defines Rigpa as “Kétchik Dangpo Shépa” ཀད་ཅིག་དང་པོ་ཤེས་པ་ “the first moment/instant of cognition”. Yes. And that ties in nicely with the famous paragraph #9 in The Cycle of Day and Night. Marc's ...

Re: "Instant presence"

I've just found this snippet from Dzogchen Teachings, Tashigar South: There are two types of presence. One is linked to your attention. You think, "I must not be distracted, I must stay present". You combine every action with this attention: this is ordinary presence. The other is when you discover ...

Re: "Instant presence"

The way I parse the term is more like "instantaneous presence", ie the "presence" (another word I think is a little odd) which arises instantaneously, and is therefore not produced by a cause.

"Instant presence"

I've always found the term "instant presence" a bit odd, as it's not obvious how to parse it. It's a very common term for the nature of mind in the DC, but I've not found it explained from an etymological point of view in anything by Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche. How's it meant to be read? What's the exac...

Vajrayana has all the components for a powerful cult. The welfare of the students requires that the guru has the morals to not assemble and implement them.

Re: Mipham Rinpoche channels Weinstein:

I cannot say whether they agree as regards Sogyal as I cannot discern what DJK's position is His position is twofold: 1. Sogyal R’s students (most likely) do not have binding samaya with Sogyal R because of multiple reasons. So in his case the issue is moot. 2. However if they actually had formed a...

Re: Mipham Rinpoche channels Weinstein:

I don't think there is a conflict in the slightest. What's needed is that any teacher properly assesses a student and also checks their own motivation. We also have a responsibility to check we are not naïve when getting involved with something. Have you read DJKR’s essay on the Sogyal/Riga scandal...

Re: Mipham Rinpoche channels Weinstein:

I’d like to articulate my seemingly conflicting positions. As my signature currently says, I support HHDL and Mingyur R’s positions on abusive lamas. The teachings on karmamudra and guru yoga are being widely misused as rationalizations for abuse. I also believe that karmamudra practice, when done ...

Re: Mipham Rinpoche channels Wienstein:

Someone can boot me out of a dharma centre if they like as it's their property, but try to stick me in some hippy 'prison' and I'm going to kick off. It's literally a crime - false imprisonment. I agree that it's pretty weird, but I don't think it has anything to do with the sexual misconduct. When...
