Re: Meditation with nature sounds
When i go outside and hear the birds and insects, the trees blowing in the wind, I always pause to meditate. But normally when i do sitting meditation it's enough noise, my clock, my wife in the kitchen, traffic on the streets, lawn service workers, construction... I smile and think of those noises ...

Great, good to hear, closure to some extent for you. So where does this leave you? You have a practice, sangha, etc?

Re: Can schizophrenics make progress to enlightenment through meditation?
As long as theyre not completely gone into a totally different reality where there is no way for them to receive transmission, I would think it's kind of irrelevant to the path :) edit: meditation is meditation. either you're aware of it or you're not. meditation for a schizophrenic is the same as ...

Re: Buddhist Economics
Came across this article on Buddhistdoor. Buddhist Economics: The Beginnings of a Promising Approach Its more or less a blurb with references for further inquiry, but interested to hear what the DW crowd has to say about it. Thoughts? Opinions? We were already on board with these ideas in...

Thanks adept! Can you tell me a bit about the background (your own words) about this teaching, this teacher, I'm assuming this is Berkeley Buddhist Monastery? If so, I'm traveling there soon on family business and can add to my itinerary... Yes it is Berkeley Buddhist Monastery. Years ago when I fi...

Urban Dictionary Beta, definition #2 A beta is a male who, instead of being alpha and manning up, completely bitches out. Can apply to many situations, but often refers to scenarios with women. Guy 1: Bro, hook me up with that girl's friend Guy 2: frak that. I'm going to double up with both of them....

Re: Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)
Criminalization isn't the way forward. Victimizing women isn't either. If all the money spent on these two agendas (criminalization, victimization) had been used for social services, the problem would have far less impact. It's a classic case of how fundamentalist activism up to and including terror...

Looks to me like an attempt to draw attention to herself. And you are engaging in that process. Manipulative people have a funny way of going away when you stop feeding them attention. Try it.

Re: Kundalini Awakening vs Buddhist Awakening
I feel it's wrong to have a bias, a closed mind about where the Path goes, if a person develops siddhis quite incidentally, in other words, if it is a involuntary by-product of being on the Path, then the inclination to reject and condemn it seem misguided. As well as misleading and unhelpful to peo...

Re: Kalachakra deity, Tantric Buddhism
Personally I've never had a problem with the understanding that there are 5 skandhas, that are subject to male, female, conception, birth, death (some may remember the opening graphic of the Ben Casey show). The idea that YabYum imagery or what it depicts is somehow less sacred than other iconograph...

Re: Do Bodhisattvas and non-historical Buddhas "exist"?
Some people consider these to be just like religious baggage, akin to a tendency towards theism. I suppose one could argue that Bodhisattvas like Avalokitesvara, Kuan Yin, Kannon aren't "real" but who is to say "arhats" are real either? Or that a "historical Buddha" is real? Maybe everything is just...

A wheel out of round is referred to as "dukkha" - that's the original meaning. So think in terms of "life is unmanagable" or "rough ride" or "why does this always happen to me?" or all the other negative reactions to life's uncertainties that arise out of the ego's "needs" not being compatible with ...

Re: Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)
Dechen Norbu - I'm okay with what you're saying here. And my apologies, my numbers were wrong. Its a study done in the USA by National Right to Life and it says 80% of abortions at that time were of single women and that the majority of those were from either/or single status or partner not deemed s...

Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)
Perhaps abortion is already way down the line in a sequence of problems caused by the common mindset in our society. As important as debating its legal framing, is understanding how we got to that situation in the first place. What is it that makes abortion such a common practice these days? The an...

Re: For the science and religion crowd
Typical reply as expected. No surprises here! Actually, the statistics on abortion confirm exactly my stance. Approximately 80% of all abortions are due to men quitting a relationships when their partner becomes pregnant. If you want to know what is wrong with society, it has nothing to do with peop...
