Re: Gohonzon; considerations on authenticity, provenance, faith

Where I practiced in the old days in NSA my district leader would make setting up a new member's altar something of an eye-opening ceremony; helping to set up the altar, hanging the gohonzon, essentially handing the practice to a new member. Often other members of the district would donate beads, bo...

Re: Dai Gohonzon

Speaking as moderator, since the Dai-gohonzon is associated with Nichiren Shoshu and has historically been a sensitive topic, it would be well to leave conversation about it to those concerned. That said, questions of authenticity etc as discussed here are pertinent to all the schools- there are ma...

Re: Fuji Taiseki-ji Kenshōkai

Yeah the old SG had some big downsides- quite too much control business, pushing you to do activities and so on. Reluctance was often viewed as a lax practice, or unwillingness. Sometimes that kind of thing is healthy encouragement to get you out of a comfort zone, but for sure a lot of times it wa...

Re: Fuji Taiseki-ji Kenshōkai

:) Just recently back before covid closed everything I was joking with my old YWD chapter leader that he only calls me to do activities when the weather is really hot or really cold lol At various times I've slept in airports and in a sleeping bag on grass supporting SG activities, those leading-up ...

Re: Fuji Taiseki-ji Kenshōkai

Possibly similar to SG in the old days- we did streetcorner campaigns, strongly encouraged friends and families to go to meetings. It was a strongly numbers-driven organization; you were always pushed to have visitors in meetings, bringing in new members; the more the better, as a sign of your commi...

Re: Fuji Taiseki-ji Kenshōkai

SGI USA formed from Nichiren Shoshu America after the schism, but the drumming/dancing/performances etc were all inherited from earlier days in Japan- part of the currency of the lay practice. They are done at various scales; smaller exhibitions in the more local meetings, much fancier and extensive...

Re: How to generate real compassion

It would not be unreasonable to expect change in yourself; evolution of view, relaxing of grasping or aversion towards this idea or that. Things that were important might become less so, things you thought were not become more interesting. It might be that the universe doesn't care that you sit on a...

Re: Young Asian American Buddhists are reclaiming narrative after decades of white dominance

As an Asian American Buddhist it seems to me these kids have internalized American attitudes about race and vocabulary of the current racial dialogue. Not necessarily a good thing, imho. Turns this project into a critical race theory discussion rather than a Buddhist discussion. I get it clueless w...

Re: Is it normal for ones' faith to wax and wane over time?

Unless I'm forgetting something, Nichiren didn't particularly take up issues around self/non-self in a doctrinal way I read: All beings and environment from Hell, the Lowest, to Buddhahood, the Highest are without exception Manifestations of Myoho Renge Kyo. This is Nichiren proposing his interpret...

Re: Is it normal for ones' faith to wax and wane over time?

Its funny, I really don't know what "thusness" is- I suppose I can accept that things are "thus", and "thus" things are, and we also have 10 Suchnesses, which seem related to "thusness" and so on, but compared to what seems to me exacting and clear commentary ...

Re: Is it normal for ones' faith to wax and wane over time?

Nichiren did discuss Eternity, Happiness, True Self, and Purity as per a fragment of gosho- apparently accepting the Nirvana sutra argument- but unfortunately it just a bit of text oriented towards contrast with Theravadan doctrine.

Re: Is it normal for ones' faith to wax and wane over time?

I had to look on google to find Nichiren example of no self/ separation. However Nichiren practitioners can better help. https://www.nichirenlibrary.org/en/wnd-1/Content/40 I think opening our very heart could support faith, our very heart which is not a fleshi location. :namaste: Unless I'm forget...
