Re: How to Structure Retreat

Personally, in the retreats I've done, I've always used the first meditation session of each day for refuge, the 4 immeasurables and bodhicitta. This allows me to try and set a good motivation for the all the subsequent sessions whether they be analytical meditations or concentration meditation. Th...

Re: How to Structure Retreat

By “retreat” do you mean, like, an intensive practice for a day or two, and you might do that a few times, or do you mean something longer, like a couple of weeks all at once, to a year or more? There is a big difference. Shutting yourself off for a day, or a weekend, is something most experienced ...

How to Structure Retreat

I'm planning to spend the next year doing a lot of meditation. I am not working currently and have some free time on my hands. I spent the last day doing a bit of a retreat, spending the bulk of the day focused on meditation (mainly short periods of 15-30 minutes at a time). I focused mainly on doin...

Re: What's the best-smelling / flavor of incense, and where do you buy from?

I just found a great incense a few weeks ago. It's a blend of frankincense, myrrh, and sandalwood; it's produced by Triloka. It's one of the best smelling incenses I've ever found.

Re: What to do when someone feels drowned in numerous Bad Karmic Actions?

There are many good things to do: 1) purify as much as possible, whether through prostrations, Vajrasattva, 35 or 88 Buddhas Repentance, Akshobya mantra, and/or possibly attend a repentance ceremony at a temple such as Compassionate Water Repentance Ritual or Emperor Liang Repentance Ritual or whate...

Re: Family in next birth - Cause and Effect Sutra

I don't know specifically, but I was told by a close student of the 16th Karmapa that if one wishes to meet the dharma in one's future life, it is good to practice Guru Yoga. That is an excellent method for creating the cause for meeting the dharma.

Fire Under the Snow, Movie

I just discovered this movie that was put out several years ago; it's about Palden Gyatso, the Tibetan monk who was imprisoned for 33 years in China. He maintained his practice throughout imprisonment, always going back to his meditation while being tortured. He said there were times that he felt ha...

Re: Questions

Compassion is sympathy for the suffering of others and the desire to free them from it. It's more than loving kindness, because beyond being kind to a person, there is an additional wish to be able to alleviate their suffering in a concrete way. From what I understand, there is an active element in ...

Campaigns and Projects to help Tibetans

Here is a list of things you can do to support Tibet and Tibetans. http://www.umass.edu/rso/fretibet/do.html It is an old list, but I think it could still be helpful. I have heard that writing letters of behalf of prisoners is one of the best ways to help. The letters get through and they make a dif...

Interview with Palden Gyatso, Imprisoned for 33 Years

I was deeply moved by this interview of Palden Gyatso, which was conducted by Annie Lennox. He details some of the abuses he suffered in Chinese prison, and discusses his work of raising awareness for prisoners who have suffered and still suffer. He also talks about how a person must develop their m...

Re: Not sure where to ask this

I can recommend a few books that really helped me to A) understand more about the teachings/understand the fundamentals, and B) develop a reliable practice. *Thich Nhat Hanh, "Heart of the Buddha's Teachings" (this covers the fundamental Buddhist teachings) *Tulku Thondup, Healing Power of...

Re: Giving Up Masturbation

I have also read about yogis recommending one clean their genitals with cold water before bed to prevent the sexual urge. Paramahansa Yogananda advised one to take a towel with cold water and wash the genitals, which is supposed to diminish the sexual urge.
