Re: Fat shaming
This is rather important. Laboratory animals with caloric controlled diets have also become obese along with many other populations of animals in contact with industrialized human societies. This indicates some sort of widespread contamination causing obesity completely independent of caloric consum...

Re: Fat shaming
Adiposity, satiety, and hunger are regulated by homeostatic mechanisms. The parameters that govern regulation are not yet well characterized. A keystone mechanism of obesity is the loss of leptin receptors by a region in the brain called the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus due to endoplasmi...

Re: Fat shaming
Smcj, healthy people do not over eat. When healthy people over eat they feel sick and lose the desire for food because their satiety is regulated. When healthy people over eat their metabolism increases so weight gains are transient if they occur at all. When obese people over eat, they still feel d...

Re: Fat shaming
Once someone becomes obese, the outcome of remediative measures producing a permanent reduction in weight is almost zero. Obese people endure incredible pain dieting and exercising to lose weight and the weight loss only lasts a few months, if it occurs at all. Social life and reproduction are very ...

Re: Debunking foil-hat theories on public health
Even one serious adverse reaction in the safety stage of clinical trials(50-100 test subjects) can end the trials; you don't need multiple deaths to determine a drug is dangerous. A lethal reaction to a drug for .5% of patients means 5 deaths out of 1000. If a doctor treats 20 patients with a drug, ...

Re: Debunking foil-hat theories on public health
The USA is a republic that requires independent thinking and unending scrutiny of authorities to function. Unfortunately, some people think it is the sole providence of the media and unelected authorities to establish truth and diseminate it. Ultimately this thread is about trust. Who do you trust ...

Re: Debunking foil-hat theories on public health
I had a family member who suffered kidney disease and, before it was diagnosed, fluoride poisoning as a result of fluoride treated water. My family spent hundreds a year to filter the municiple water that was needlessly tainted. The USA is a republic that requires independent thinking and unending s...

Re: Being loving toward malevolent people?
My father told me that someone he knew required stitches because another person intentionally placed a razor blade between volumes of the kangyur and that I should always use caution with whatever I'm reading. This has a double meaning of course. There is a significant risk in immediately interpreti...

Re: Tolerance for other religions
I don't know how well Western ideas of tolerance are mirrored by Buddhism. I don't recall seeing the word used in English translations.
It's not necessary to have a Buddhist reason to do a civic duty.

Re: New schools in early buddhism
Buddha Shakyamuni taught the essential points for liberation. Multiple and contradictory schools of thought about non-essential points aren't what I would define as a schism. Depending on the situation, most people hold a range of views. It's not strange that there would be a range of views on non-e...

Re: Where to draw line in not speaking of faults of others?
There are corrupt traditions that alter the vows for their agenda, such as having the rule you can have only one teacher. There are sometimes mistakes in translation and comprehension. There are sometimes omissions from the teaching cycle. Occasionally, I will hear of a gross misunderstanding of a v...

(10) Being loving toward malevolent people
If we are motivated purely by love and compassion,... If we lack these qualifications, however, we incur no fault in simply boycotting such persons.

Highly Educated Tibetans All Talk/Write the Same?
Someone told me that they can tell if a Tibetan authored a text because they use the same syntax, expressions, vocabulary, and break things down into numbered categories differently from others. I can see some validity to this for older Tibetans who shared many of the same English tutors, but I doub...

Re: May buddhist use antibiotics?
If it is too small to see it is not a violation of the vows. If you put it under a microscope and kill it, is it a violation? If you have poor eyes can you kill freely? The rules set by the Buddha were only established because a need arose, they aren't comprehensive. Many grey areas. The Buddha allo...

Re: No, the external world is an illusion, right?
The world as it appears to us does not objectively exist. The world as it typically appears to me can't exist because it's view of static self existent objects contradicts the qualities of objects changing due to circumstances. If I absorb the appearances and dissolve them in meditation, the distinc...

Re: Role of pictures/images/portraits in buddhism
I have read that initially images of the Buddha and written records of his teachings were not done because of a cultural taboo based on written language being used for commerce and administration. The role of iconographic Buddha images is to remind Buddhists of Buddhist qualities (major and minor ma...
