Re: Video on Gompopa and Buddha Nature.
What is probably true however is that Tsongkhapa was very influential in 'demoting' the lineage of Maitreya/Asanga below that of Nagarjuna/Madhyamaka, whereas more traditionally these two lineages were seen as equal. This is definitely not so. For example, Sapan, whom you mention above, considered ...

Re: What happens in those 3 year retreats?
It's a lot. Starts with preliminaries, proceeds to empowerment, deity yoga, completion stage, fire pumas, ganapuja, Mahamudra, Dzogchen, etc. There's a schedule that starts around 4 am and ends around 6 or 8 pm. There is sleep, though sometimes sitting up in a box. It's intense for sure.

Sure it is. The Lanka states that tathāgatgarbha is the natural luminosity of the mind. What more does one need to know? There is the nonmaterial appearance of wisdom. That's beyond the scope of Karl B's talk. I'm sorry I thought we were discussing tathatagarbha sutras. Remind me where he mentions ...

Re: Brunnhölzl on Buddha Nature as a radical teaching.
All this madhyamaka discussion is off topic. The buddhanature is not fully elaborated in the Sutras. It is merely described with analogies. And why is there not even one reference to a tathatagarbha sutra? There's a lot of hot air in this thread and it's misleading.

Re: Brunnhölzl on Buddha Nature as a radical teaching.
According to Kalachakra and commentaries, and probably Dzogchen as well, this comes down to a thorough analysis of that which appears as wisdom yet is nonmaterial, for example clear light not only as purity but many forms, wisdoms, beneficial manifestations, etc.

Re: Vajra Guru mantra practice as a newbie
I want to start chanting the guru rinpoche mantra, since I finally accept Dharma as true.i researched science a lot and came to this conclusion. Anyways;do i need a guru/monastic empowerment to chant? can i still get all the benefits and blessings just chanting in my own home to the best of my abil...

Re: Seeking advice for all day mantra recitation
Any advice for a 2-3 day retreat of reciting mostly mantra from sun up to sun down? Practical concerns include general stamina as well as things like voice getting tired, dry mouth etc. I suppose it would be useful to have a cup of water handy and to chant quietly so as not to tire the voice? Perha...

Re: Guru Rinpoche devotional practices
How is this debate about online empowerments not off topic? You don't need an empowerment to practice devotion. You don't need an empowerment to practice Bodhicitta. That's Garchen Rinpoche's point, anyway. And who engages in a serious practice after an online empowerment? This is all for making con...

Re: Guru Rinpoche devotional practices
You can take an online Guru Rinpoche empowerment, even from recorded empowerments - from Garchen Rinpoche. Caveat emptor. Many lamas, probably a majority, do not accept this. This is true, that being said, Garchen Rinpoche is held in extremely high esteem by many lamas. KN The Drikung Kagyu approac...

Re: Guru Rinpoche devotional practices
Kunzang Dechen Lingpa Rinpoche spoke about how he couldn't get into empowerments because he was too poor; so he prayed to Guru Rinpoche with single minded devotion. Jigmed Lingpa did this with Longchenpa. Eventually each had clear visions of these masters and got empowerments from them directly. Not...

Re: Guru Rinpoche devotional practices
Hi! Although I've been interested in Vajrayana for quite some time I currently hold no initiations in any school or lineage nor I had the possibility to meet any lama. I'm not really interested in high tantras (self generation) at the moment, just Guru Rinpoche devotional practices, are there any t...

Guru sadhanas are for blessings. Yidam sadhanas are for siddhi/accomplishment. Dakini sadhanas are for prophecies and/or activities. Guru is the yidam. Siddhis come from kyerim. Activities are for those accomplished; they call it dzogrim. Is this the kagyu view, while Lama Pema presented the nyingm...

Re: Reciting Mantras while walking
Totally. Actually there are mantras that are like purifications of the six realms or purifications upon hearing or touching and if you walk around reciting those and the air touches the air that touches others will be gigantic good fortune for you and everyone else. Everything is interdependent. I ...

Re: Reciting Mantras while walking
I have a - maybe -strange question: The pandemic forces me to sit a lot more bcs of homeoffice, lack of walking to work etc. That kinda effects my ability to sit for meditation. Instead of trying to force me to sit even more, i now started to accumulate mantras while walking. Either in my home or i...
