Re: Why do monks reside in temples
Suggest that mods move this thread to academic discussion, since it is largely about the speculations of a small number of western buddhologists, and the rules of that sub-forum require citations and evidence. I still remain confused as to why someone practicing self-customized SG wants to tell the ...

Re: Movies you have watched a lot of times.
It’s a great film and one of Redford’s best performance but...didn’t the chronology bother you? The two immortal CIA agents that did the same job in every conflict from Vietnam to the 1990s?

Re: Practicing without empowerment
First, I have ZERO intention of practicing without an empowerment. I take that seriously. What happens if someone does, though? I've heard on one end of the spectrum that the practice is simply without fruit and on the other end of the spectrum that bad things will happen to you in this life. What ...
Re: The Dream
Ordinary karmic dream. Probably means nothing. If you want a meaning from it: keep practising.

Re: Does a Vegan Damaru exist anywhere?
that kind of attitude is a purist attitude and plays into some cultural notions about death, ugliness, and purity that I think are worth poking at. I see what you are getting at. But how far will we go with it? Natural aversions to bad smells and pain are there too. I guess we must start building t...

Re: Does a Vegan Damaru exist anywhere?
Of course I have seen the opposite. At one ganapuja there was a fight and nastiness over the presence of meat and alcohol. People objected to meat and alcohol in a feast offering? How did that play out exactly? Did they know anything about the ritual they were performing, or the vows they had taken...

Re: Translation of Dharma Name
Why did he give me the wrong name? Naming convention for Sheng Yan's students is that they follow the Linji lineage poem. Those receiving vows from Sheng Yan are called Guo X. Those receiving vows from Guo X are called Chang X. Those receiving vows from Chang X are called Yan X. Etc etc. I quoted t...

Sorry, but no.
If you want to study the standard model, do that; if you want to study middle way, do that. But don’t mix them up, they’re not the same thing.

PvS: the context for "演" here is: "能仁圣果,常演宽宏". So probably best to emphasize qualities of awakening.PadmaVonSamba wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 11:07 pm Yan 演 in this context means to display (the qualities of a Buddha).

Re: Translation of Dharma Name
I was hoping somebody could translate this dharma name into Tibetan for me. Thanks in advance. Note: Yes. I know this isn’t a normal thing. But explain to me how it’s a bad thing, and I’ll drop it. Re: I would like to learn more about Rime.
Read the bios of Jamgon Kongtrul and Khyentse Wangpo. The rime movement was basically an effort by them, their associates and disciples to collect, preserve and transmit a lot of minor lineages that were at risk of dying off. The key figures were for the most part Sakya-trained Dzogchen practitioner...

Re: Buddhist Rock & Metal
To be fair though, plenty of overtly Buddhist pop music is, to my ears, more offensive than this stuff. Sugary sweet mantra recitation, etc. tastes vary widely. I feel very conflicted with that stuff. I think it sounds horrible. But there are people who really enjoy it and find it meaningful and be...

Re: Changchub Dorje Kalachakra
If I may offer an opinion. What Rinpoche is saying with the essence mantra is kalachakra over the centuries has accredited so much “over lay” and cultural expansion, it has become seriously complicated and takes months in preparation to disperse. The essence mantra cuts through all that... Be happy...

You seem very invested in your ideas- which is definitely one of the things that can happen when attempting a DIY practice. Are you looking for a "yes, you're right- you have Zen all figured out"? I’m sorry I’ve given you that impression. No I’m not looking for someone to tell me, “Yes, you get it!...

Nobody really knows if this debate actually happened, if "the mahayana monk" (that's what he's basically referred to as) was a real person, a composite person or a strawman, or if the decision to affiliate with India was made on philosophical or political grounds. There are good arguments to think ...
