The Oros
The worlds sorrows are painted in past tense tomorrows and I always forget just where I am. Could I ask the point and be bestowed with a glimpse that surpasses the unsurpassable? What I ask for is something far beyond meddling mundane sensibilities. And I know.. and I remember.. No such knowledge wi...

Facebook funds AI mind-reading experiment
https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-49165713 University of California San Francisco scientists asked the patients to answer out loud a list of simple multiple-choice questions ordered randomly. And the algorithms learned to identify: the question they had been asked, 75% of the time their chosen ans...

Re: What brought you to the dharma & what's your biggest challenge?
I always had an interest in Spirituality; and I always enjoyed Buddhist ideas, and concepts when I ran into them. Early on I'd say it was mainly Alan Watts; then from there I'd say the main things that 'brought' me to the path were, a few people on this forum a very long time ago, combined with visi...

Re: Meditation techniques taught in paid meditation apps vs real mediation
1. If you pay attention to an app, you are not meditating, just cheating yourself. 2. If you have learnt not to pay attention to thoughts, emotions, internal and external objects, you are meditating but might be making unnecessary effort in order to ignore that app. .. You can meditate just fine wh...

Re: Meditation techniques taught in paid meditation apps vs real mediation
I learned meditation without applications, but I have used some from time to time, mainly for the relaxing sounds. I recently purchased an EEG headset, that has a meditation application(phone). This one works exceptionally well, it's based on neurofeedback. https://choosemuse.com/muse-2/ The applic...

Re: Mother has entered hospice
My mother entered hospice today. I would appreciate prayers for her recovery or passage to the Pure Lands. :namaste: Kirt I'm so sorry. After just going through it myself I understand what you're feeling a bit. I spent a lot of time angry, or mad for any reason at all, just to avoid feeling other f...

Re: Father has cancer.
My father just passed away. He passed surrounded by his family. He was very much loved by all of us.
I would like to ask for some prayers for him. Please. Anything to guide him to a peaceful place.
Thank you all.

Re: Is it wrong to control the mind?
Giving up on controlling the mind (non-grasping) is essentially a method of controlling the mind. No matter what words are used to describe it. Control, Taming, etc. The feeling of needing to 'control' what's happening in the mind results from clinging to mental phenomena. Once clinging is relinquis...

Re: Thoughts in Samatha Meditation
One of the neatest discoveries is that emotions like boredom, or feeling like doing something else, impatience, or even feeling satisfied with your meditation; are just more momentary sensations, just like the thoughts that come and go. Once everything in the mind is treated the same way as distract...

Re: What is Art ?
Asking what is art, is kind of like asking what is love? There's no single answer. Art is different things to different people, but I think artists have been writing, paintings, sculpting, singing, playing instruments to try to answer that question for millennia. Personally, as far as writing goes a...

Personally, I would like a small cutting to clone from the official Bodhi Tree. (The one Buddha sat under). I believe the one currently in india is a clone, of a clone from the original tree.

I just wanted to post a small update, and to thank everyone again for their prayers, and well wishes. My father is feeling quite a bit better than he did when I posted, and he is now home. His diagnosis has not changed, but he feels much better than he did. I really appreciate everyone's support, it...

Those things
All those things
Temporal and indifferent
Come pouring maladies in thine cup
and for the moment
all that overflow suggests naught
In this backwards back world of a garden
Rightly parched earth awaits
Silently meandering in such lovely
and lonely melody.

Re: Father has cancer.
Thank you all so much for your prayers, and also everyone who said a prayer and didn't post, I truly thank you. I have gotten to a point in my life where I am skeptical and hesitant to pray, and hesitant to ask for others prayers. I want to be honest. Today when I came in my father's hospital room; ...

Father has cancer.
Hello all. My father was diagnosed with cancer about a month ago. He has stage 4 bladder cancer. Today they had to shut off function to one of his kidneys but can't remove it due to complications with the cancer. He is in the most pain I've ever seen him in. My father doesn't show pain to anyone.. h...

Re: Existence
It seems like you really need to define what is meant by "existence", I've seen answers pointing to a number of different topics related to existence. Inherent VS inherent existence (non-selfhood), others pointing to "reality" (EG: what is real, or unreal), and a number of other things. At its core,...
