Re: Can't control thoughts

How can you change it if I can't control the thoughts? You can't control thoughts. But just noticing your thoughts and actions changes things. The dharma gives you a framework in which positive change happens. It's good to cultivate a trust in that process. Changes are mostly small and subtle and i...

Re: Heatwave England

Currently in a week long heatwave in England Any dharmic advice on how to cope with it? 5 days in more or less Equanimity and knowing that things change. Depends on how used to heat and humidity you and your body are. Temperatures in the 30's, humidity and heat waves may not be a big deal for some,...

Re: Tips for learning language

Don’t have to go abroad to do this I probably just need to understand the methodology better. Is there a book or a website you can recommend? No book or website. It’s very simple, though hard at first. Just do all your internal dialog in the target language. When you hear someone talking, translate...

Re: Tips for learning language

You have to think in the target language. Don't allow everyday thoughts to be expressed in your native language. This means you have to limit yourself to simple thoughts for a while, or learn a lot of vocabulary very fast. Immersion language learning does seem like the ideal. Unfortunately none of ...

Re: Tips for learning language

I haven’t read it yet but I recently bought a book called Fluent Forever which is supposedly very helpful. Yes, that's the book I'm reading. It has a lot of really useful ideas. In terms of electronic flashcards, Quizlet seems to have the best Tibetan resources. There are quite a lot of Tibetan set...

Tibetan Language Institute update

David Curtis is now offering Classical Tibetan classes via Zoom, which at last allows international students the opportunity to participate. TLI has recently updated their Level 1 Workbook. A much better structure, particularly for those who want to work at their own pace without classes. The Level ...

Re: Tips for learning language

Biggest language learning tip is to set propper expectations. Language learning takes years and years. Yep. I have to keep reminding myself it's a marathon, not a sprint. Second biggest piece of advice is to distinguish between learning a language and time spent learning about learning the language...

Sure. I will let you know what she says.

I'm also musing about what my fellow Aussies are going to do with her ordained name. It's a bit of a mouthful and we Aussies are notorious for shortening every name to the absolute minimum possible. :D

Traditonal title for a novice nun?

This is a very basic question, but one of my friends has recently become a novice nun (if that is the correct term) and I'm finally meeting up with her in person next week (one of the many benefits of living in a city that currently has zero Covid-19 cases). I'm sure we'll dispense with the formalit...

Re: Why we struggle to learn languages

LOL Queequeg. I have to say I'd be surprised that, as a long-standing buddhist, you couldn't get past the superficial stuff. A lesson I learnt when one of my children went through the grunge stage was that there is still a lovable person under there somewhere. It's an idea that has stuck. I acknowle...

Re: Colds

Interesting. I first tried Young Living's 'Thieves' more than 10 years ago on the advice of a naturopath. When my local health food shop changed hands, they switched to stocking DoTerra OnGuard (presumably because it's cheaper). It seems DoTerra was established by former executives from Young Living...

Not cheap, but I have used these: https://www.ebay.com.au/p/2255437675 https://www.youngliving.com/en_AU/products/thieves-essential-oil They are similar essential oil products, so you are likely to find other variations of them in other parts of the world. The advice I received was two drops on the ...

Re: Mahamudra and Dzogchen

Personally, I find Mahamudra MUCH easier to work with than Dzogchen. Dzogchen is like being thrown into the deep end of the pool. Mahamudra can be much more step-by-step. I also find that a continuing study of Madhyamaka has been extremely useful. So does anyone else, who has experience of both sys...

Re: Jonang Kalachakra online empowerment July 24-27

Anyone who is considering taking an online empowerment should first consider the implications. It is best to have a good understanding of what empowerment is about, have thoroughly investigated the teacher and have a real connection to them. It's also worth considering the pros and cons of online em...
