Re: Buddhism and depression
I accept the principle of non duality but have yet to make the leap day to day That's probably a bit too abstract to be useful in dealing with ongoing psychological difficulties. Something like Thich Nhat Hanh's "The Miracle of Mindfulness" would be more directly applicable. https://plumvillage.org...

Re: How do modern Buddhist schools explain compassion?
How exactly should I show compassion to other people? I should compassion to people in words, or it can be material help? Should I sympathize with people only when they feel sad and lonely, or even when they feel happy? How about animals, how to sympathize with them? They, like us, feel emotions, h...

Re: How to decarbonize your life.
Still thinking about the issue, I came across this article - https://mashable.com/feature/carbon-footprint-pr-campaign-sham/ . It's worth reading in full but here are a couple of key points for time-poor folks. British Petroleum, the second largest non-state owned oil company in the world, with 18,7...

Yes, but I don't think that's the main reason they have been so schismatic. Looking at monotheism I see a structural problem which makes groups tend to split. Exaggerating wildly... Chief Priest deputy: "God told me that you are evil and should be stoned tomorrow. Deputy to followers: "God told me t...

Interesting Idea with some errors but a huge project Created by by Dzvenislava Novakіvska and her team at Funk & Consulting "The Tree of World Religions" is a stunning chart that maps the ramifications of an incredible number of religions over the last 3,000 years. https://000024.org/religions_tree...

Re: Are there any precedents that allow for 'developments' of Buddhism after the Buddha?
That's well and good, but if you take that too strictly, commentary is technically barred, and all you can have is the Pali texts. Not even sure you could have Abhidhamma. You might find yourself going down the originalist rabbit hole. The question is, what is elaboration and explanation and what i...

Neti pot is my number one solution, sometimes I use the nosedrops found here in it: https://upyournosedrops.com/. If they get bad enough I take an OTC, but most of the time they are just an annoyance. That said, I've had problems with my ears over the years and I'm wondering if some of the time it ...

Australia has been lucky, as you may know, being (1) an island nation (2) a country with a first-world medical system and (3) a country with governments not afraid to risk unpopularity by enforcing lock-downs. (Re #3, by the way, state governments which dealt with it effectively have been rewarded a...

A potential pitfall here would be the failure to face crucial developmental or life tasks head on in favor of avoiding them in the name of spirituality or enlightenment (Jack Engler paraphrase). For introverts, inward-looking practices may actually exacerbate a symptom related to social interaction...

1) the most impactful thing you can do, IMO, is get active in local/statewide politics. Denser housing, better public transportation, food co-ops, more green space, community gardens, local gas bans, greener generation portfolios, right-to-repair laws, etc., are all far bigger deals than anything y...
