some Theravada Buddhists who criticize Mahayana Buddhism, said that Mahayana Buddhists have no desire for liberation because Bodhisattva vow to not attain nirvana until all living being are liberated, such as Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in Chinese Sutras who vow to refuse nirvana until all living beings...

Re: Finding one’s root guru

Has it been something like an instant connection for any of you? He is not my current teacher, or even my current sect. But I saw him and spoke with him a bit today and asked some advice. Normally I’m a little anxious talking to my teacher and asking questions, but there was none of that with this ...

Re: Rtog pa - subtle cognition?

I’ve seen/experienced a few different presentations it seems like where there are pointing out via Shamatha prior to anything that looks like DI ala ChNN. For instance in A Tri the only thing that resembles DI to me comes later. Maybe I’m missing some subtle thing about types of transmission. One u...

Re: Rtog pa - subtle cognition?

Bob, I think everyone in the thread already has Dzogchen transmission, and we all know how central it is. If it’s not a useful conversation for some they shouldn’t participate. In other words, whether or not it’s useful to talk about Rigpa for someone else really isn’t for you to say, we all have ou...

Re: How does one deal with overthinking?

Good points! I wonder what people mean by overthinking ? IME they usually mean rumination: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3312901/#abstract-1title There are way different levels, but usually it means thinking perceived as non-productive. The linked article was a good read. Overthinkin...

Re: How does one deal with overthinking?

It depends on the level of anxiety surrounding them. If it’s low, say a 3 or 4 out of 10, you can apply cognitive strategies such as just recognizing “oh there goes my thoughts again”, recognize that you’re over thinking and move on. They are just thoughts, it’s the engagement with them that’s the ...

Re: Rtog pa - subtle cognition?

To put it another way: Whatever one thinks about Rigpa, is not Rigpa. That goes without saying, but that is not the issue and never was. If it were we could all just read about Dzogchen, and would never need introduction, ancillary practice, etc. Instead we have to receive introduction/poin...

Re: Rtog pa - subtle cognition?

This is actually not correct, as far as I know. I can supply quotes later, but for instance Tasha Nyamgel cites the ability to recognize subtle cognition as vital to recognition of Rigpa. That is, to truly recognize and stabilize Rigpa, one cannot be ignorant of rtog pa, in fact one has to have pre...

Re: Rtog pa - subtle cognition?

Been reading a few things and this is becoming relevant practice wise. Is this a good definition of rtog pa or am I getting confused? If you have to be specific, what is the real difference between “coarse” and “subtle” cognition , is it just how it is experienced by the meditator? This also connec...

Far as modern science-oriented thought I think it’s pretty simple: https://www.webmd.com/sex/the-psychological-benefits-of-celibacy Then there’s studying it as a cultural thing: https://academic.oup.com/book/2116/chapter-abstract/142054122?redirectedFrom=fulltext Then there’s seeing from the point o...

Re: (science) on celibacy

I do believe that in general for serious spiritual aspirants celibacy is superior, given the many examples of celibate masters in almost all religious traditions. Well then you are excluding rabbis, married lamas, and spiritual leaders in many if not most indigenous cultures. Semen retention is one...

Thank you all for yours conversation. Then there is no trace of division. Since no thing/being is out of emptiness, the base. All inclusive all embracing, by the grace of emptiness all is possible. "The view is like the bright sky: Free from all that is high or low, divided or partial, Neither...
