Re: Reversing Global Warming

The more political aspects of this discussion moved here: https://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?p=572211#p572211 Science is not politics. Science and understanding science is also part of the result of effective prayer and study of the five sciences, and is not separate from Buddhadharma. Good-...

Re: I'm looking for documentaries about hermits

Cien dias de soledad - 100 Days of Solitude - on Netflix Not precisely a documentary about a hermit - a Spanish photographer spends 100 days alone in a cabin photographing nature - this is also partly a memorial for his brother who had taken him to the cabin years ago. José Díaz secludes himself in ...

Re: Why drugs are bad for meditators?

I met someone who was interested in developing a meditation practice, and who also had interest in taking psychedelics. I wanted to warn her not to take drugs because I believe it could not only be harmful to her physical health, but also impede her meditation practice. Does anyone know how drugs h...

Re: Seeking advice for all day mantra recitation

Any advice for a 2-3 day retreat of reciting mostly mantra from sun up to sun down? Practical concerns include general stamina as well as things like voice getting tired, dry mouth etc. I suppose it would be useful to have a cup of water handy and to chant quietly so as not to tire the voice? Perha...

Re: Warn about a group?

If you run away from a fire, you shouldn't let others jump into it. That's just common sense Mahayana. Grow some balls :guns: That's the problem. Sometimes we don't know if there's a fire or not. And sometimes people can have negative reactions from authentic gurus. Very traditional gurus can also ...

https://www.lionsroar.com/meet-a-teacher-jack-kornfield/ Marine base he mentions is likely Camp Lejeune. I checked, and Lejeune is the only Marine base in operation in North Carolina. It was established in 1941. There are 8 military bases in NC, but a quickly search turns up that only Lejeune is a ...

Marine base he mentions is likely Camp Lejeune.
Probably but there is more than one Marine base in North Carolina. Whether there was more than one in 1945 is left as an exercise for the researcher.

Re: Why lung or transmission is needed

So what is lacking is a theory of lung (ལུང་). Tibetan lamas actually give us a theory of empowerment but not of lung. For example Tsele Natsok Rangdrol doesn't seem to mention it in his magnificent "Empowerment and the Path of Liberation". Neither does Kongtrul in his Encyclopedia as far as I can t...

You could substitute the bell mudra or practice ringing the bell very, very lightly.

Re: Movies you have watched a lot of times.

I almost always remember virtually everything in a movie so I rarely rewatch movies (certainly not with a 2 month frequency). Having said that: Island of the Blue Dolphin (as a kid, on Disney) Scarecrow (same) 2001 Enter the Dragon Fist of Fury Dracula (and almost all of the Christopher Lee Dracula ...

Profound - going to some 'land', hearing and seeing the Buddha or devas, etc. Never - everything we experience is just mind. Always - everything we experience is just mind. going to some 'land', hearing and seeing the Buddha or devas Those are just dream experiences. Some people experience them and...

Re: Prayer? How does Buddhist prayer work?

I’m not precisely sure what you mean by this—certain wealth practices like wealth hooking, treasure vases and wealth deity sang exist solely within Vajrayana. The zung-du is also full of wealth dharanis and there are wealth pujas for eg Orgyen Norlha. Are you saying these are discouraged or treatin...
