Re: Why are DharmaWheel and DhammaWheel separated?

The differences are enough that it would be an unnecessary source of conflict to be in the same sandbox. As a Mahayanist, I don't need to constantly be told I'm not Buddhist. Some of the folk over there are quite intolerant. Alright I would hate to stir up some heated discussion, especially since I...

Re: Favourite Professional Sports

1. NFL (American football) - Pros: Perhaps the most use of strategy in any team sport. Complex plays are developed and used. Each play is like a chess move, in a strategic play. The wide variety of positions also make it like chess. The linemen are like the pawns. The offensive and defensive backs ...

Re: Emptiness as "insignificance" and as "spatial vacuity"

[ Oh yes it is, but it is the only way I can proceed in this life! I wholeheartedly admit that my claims are partly sentimental & partly dogmatic, but this is my way to go: put into words a viewpoint that seems fertile for discussion hoping that some clarity could emerge along the way. I do not...

Re: Emptiness as "insignificance" and as "spatial vacuity"

What would your take on this be? :anjali: Wasn't sure what you were asking, but now I think I get it. Wallace, as far as I know, is not talking about some common ground of being out of which we all arise. That ground of being, the tathagatagarbha, the buddhanature, is the real nature of each of us....

Yep - the fun factor. I forgot to add, I like the local high school sports, too. Its fun to see kids you've seen grow up from youth sports playing at the JV and varsity level.

Re: Favourite Sports

Side comment - attending professional sports has gotten outrageously expensive so I've stopped seeing events live unless I get free tickets. I've instead started attending semi-pro and college games and find it as entertaining as well as reasonably priced. Of course, the star power isn't there, but ...

Re: Emptiness as "insignificance" and as "spatial vacuity"

I'm afraid OP will need to keep looking for some teaching to fit their ideas into. Buddhadharma will not be the stamp of approval. The OP might be more comfortable with Vedantaism. It’s more aligned with the view that everything is part of one great consciousness, which is common to many different ...

Re: POLL: What type of mango-practitioner are you (as per "Letter to a friend" verse 20)?

I don't think I could trust anyone who picked something other than 4. As I said, I did not want people to take it too seriously. Despite my effort, I failed. Also I think Nagarjuna did not create 4 categories just to trick everyone and assign everyone into only one category. Also, there are...

Re: Favourite Sports

The activity I have probably given the most time to over the course of my life is skateboarding. Next would be ice hockey. Next snowboarding. If I had grown up near the ocean, I probably would have surfed. These days, I probably ride my bicycle more than anything else. If you can see the theme... I ...

I don't think I could trust anyone who picked something other than 4. Upaka the Ājīvaka saw the Blessed One traveling on the road between Gayā and the (place of) Awakening, and on seeing him said to him, “Clear, my friend, are your faculties. Pure your complexion, and bright. On whose accoun...

I think there is something similar about Toronto and Yokohama... Maybe why the bay stars affinity?

I like to watch American Football - go Bills! - but I like to play hockey. My son I think nailed it - it feels like you're flying... and you get to check people.

For me, it is a momentary impulse: override inertia. Once moving, much easier to continue.

Cold pail of water over the head can help. Not kidding.

Re: Emptiness as "insignificance" and as "spatial vacuity"

Perhaps I did not make it clear enough that what I mean by space-fullness-permanence is totally mind-quality. That's quite a qualified description of mind. Space - mind is sometimes equated with space. Space though, has no qualities. Fullness and permanence are loaded. However those terms are defin...

Re: Emptiness as "insignificance" and as "spatial vacuity"

Emptiness as spatial vacuity is the meaning of the "vast emptiness" of Bodhidharma and Huineng. It incorporates both tangible objects and mental phenomena. So, when we say that the state of (or nature of) phenomena is zero, it means that phenomena possess no intrinsic, unchanging, or self...

Re: Struggling With Lotus Sutra

Thanks for your post! Yes, I have read it and agree that the Lotus teaches Ekayāna and that everything is the Buddha's upāya . Still, in the Lotus, there are passages that denigrate Śrāvakas, some of which Scott brought up, which is why I mentioned other Mahāyāna texts which do not do that. I don't...

Re: Emptiness as "insignificance" and as "spatial vacuity"

I would like first to state my understanding of "emptiness" in two contexts, trying to condense the wording as far as possible, and then ask a question. A. Emptiness as regards dependent origination is customarily intended to mean "insignificance of material and mental phenomena"...
