Re: Three thousand thoughts in a single life moment..

Yeah, all I can say is I don't think Zhiyi devolved to the sarvastivadin position as you describe it. Well, the three dependent originations pretty much coved every possible causal relationship. I would not call it a devolution. I'm not sure cause and effect as you have in mind applies to the view ...

Re: Help me understand Anatta

And like the Mahayana Mahaparinirvana Sutra when read literally and not through preconceived hermeneutical lens, Dolpopa, the Jonang tradition, various historical East Asian Buddhists, and various modern scholars and practitioners of Buddhism. It's obvious that this interpretation has existed for a...

Re: Three thousand thoughts in a single life moment..

Well, I don't think Zhiyi would say phenomena are causes of all other phenomena. That would imply what he calls a vertical relationship, which he says is not correct. I think the key here would be the ichinen - one thought-moment, ie. ksana. He's not talking about successive moments that would sugg...

Re: Three thousand thoughts in a single life moment..

How is this different than the yogacāra assertion? That's a good question. In general, I don't think it is, except that Zhiyi argued that the mind only position is incomplete. So, for instance, Yogacarin would say the cup is the mind. Zhiyi argued that it could also be said that the mind is the cup...

By understanding that the world is our mind, we enter the Sudden and Perfect path. How is this different than the yogacāra assertion? That's a good question. Re: Help me understand Anatta

Sanlun which claimed to be a Madhyamaka lineage is not the limit of Madhyamaka thought in East Asia. Hi Queequeg, can you elaborate on this? Are you referring to the developments in Tientai? Thanks. Hi. This fellow claimed that in East Asia Madhyamaka was an inferior teaching and apparently of litt...

Re: Three thousand thoughts in a single life moment..

Ichinen sanzen is the concept that summarizes the view Zhiyi taught in Mohezhikuan/Makashikan/Great Samatha and Vipasyana. Guanding, one of his main disciples, summarized it as follows (Swanson's translation): The perfect-and-sudden [method of practicing cessation-and-contemplation] involves taking ...

Re: Help me understand Anatta

It’s like a snowman in a as field of snow, in a snowstorm, whose true nature is snow. The snow is just there, everywhere. The snowman is only there because some of the snow is packed together, with stick arms and a carrot nose. Those are the snowman’s skandhas. You undo those, and the true nature o...

Re: Help me understand Anatta

The goal of the Buddhist path is to end the causes and conditions for future rebirth This is a sravaka goal. The goal of the bodhisattva is buddhahood. If the skandhas are the totality of a sentient being and no metaphysical entity or otherwise transcends them and nirvana is simply the elimination ...

Re: Help me understand Anatta

Well the Pali cannon technically is a part of Mahayana too in the form of the Agamas, but I see your point about mixing the Pali vs. Sanskrit terminology. As to Madhyamaka, yes it is a bit confusing isn't it? I am no expert on the philosophy personally since my interests are more East Asian Buddhis...

Re: Help me understand Anatta

Point 1 - you are in a Mahayana and Vajrayana forum so, in the least, your terminology needs some adjusting. You may also end up with different answers than what you might get from a Theravada view. anatta=anatman, dukkha=dukkha, anicca=anitya, skandha=skandha Mahayana arguably starts (and ends) wit...

Wonderful. Sounds like you got it right. I remember you've posted about your relationship with your parents over the years, and so to read that this is the place you've been able to come to is truly wonderful. I'm inspired to hear of this fruit from your practice. :applause: Thank you for sharing th...

Re: Fuji Taiseki-ji Kenshōkai

To present a more critical opinion, this article is old but paints Kenshokai in a darker light, as a quasi-militaristic group characterized by bizzare, apocalyptic paranoia, fanatical leader-devotion, and delusions of grandeur. ...Kenshokai differs from other Nichiren sects, especially the politica...

Re: Fuji Taiseki-ji Kenshōkai

That Culture Festival stuff started with Soka Gakkai, except they did it with joy. As a participant in many festivals, including security in the hot sun for hours or guarding such things as an out of the way metal plaque of Toda at two in the morning, I wouldn't say joyful. Don't forget QQ, we were...

In the US, SGI does, and back when it was Nichiren Shoshu America. So Soka Gakkai got that from Nichiren Shoshu, but then discontinued after the separation? Or do they still do this? If not, any reason that they didn't continúe the práctice that you're aware of? Guessing, then, that Nichiren Shoshu...

Re: Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi in Tendai

Despite all the complicated rhetoric, it amounts to a doctrine common to all schools—the mind is inherently pure, and afflictions are merely adventitious. I believe that is more or less the correct summary. I don't know, but I do get the sense that the understanding of this doctrine, hongaku, has b...

Re: Young Asian American Buddhists are reclaiming narrative after decades of white dominance

I think alot of 'cultural appropriation' that people seem so offended by tends to happen because, for a lack of better term "White Americans" don't really have much of a culture of their own. I'd beg to differ. When you are immersed in a culture and know nothing else, it may be hard to ap...
