Re: celebrity tried being a commoner, says it sucks

I guess this is why politicians, once elected, will sell their souls sooner than become an "ordinary" person again. Yes, that's pretty much it for nearly all of them. It's all about the power trip and ego. Some say that "they are doing it for the country" or even don't take a sa...

Re: celebrity tried being a commoner, says it sucks

There are a few times in my life when, briefly, I slipped from commoner status as an adult. On one of my visits to Ethiopia, back in the late 1990s my sister-in-law took me to the school where she teaches in an elementary school. It was an inner-city school and most of the students were poor, some ...

celebrity tried being a commoner, says it sucks

“I went to a special effects makeup artist, had consultations, and asked him to make me a prosthetic disguise,” Bacon told the outlet. Once outfitted and incognito, he went to The Grove – one of the most visited and populous commercial centers in Los Angeles – and was thrilled to discover that “nob...

An eccentric philosophy professor gives a one-question final exam after the semester... The class is already seated and ready to go when the professor picks up his chair, plops it on his desk, and writes on the board... "Using everything we have learned this semester, prove that this chair does...

Re: Skeptic interested in Buddhism

When I see your name I can't help but think Domain Name System. When users can't access a website do you get blamed? :P :D I had the initials DNS before it was cool. How do you gather those metrics? If you don't mind me asking. Just a guess from what I have observed from the two forums and...

Re: Skeptic interested in Buddhism

Welcome to DW! ☸ I learned that there is another forum separate from this one, dhammawheel.com, for Theravada? Are the differences between Theravada and Mayahana so vast that they require different websites? The differences are not too vast, but there are differences. It was mostly set-up this way, ...

Re: Chinese Buddhism: cooking meat during the 49-day funeral period?

I'm a cook (amongst other things). What is the general feeling about cooking meat for others during the 49-day funeral period—I of course won't eat any of the meat that I prepare since I'm vegetarian until the 50th day. This is something I've been wrestling with since the death of my family member....

65 and partly cloudy here in the Bay Area. It's supposed to get hot over the weekend: we could hit 76 or 77. Sorry folks. I lived on the east coast for years and don't miss the summers. Especially not now. California rules, Florida drools. California along the coast (on the coast or with...

Secular saint Allan Saxe (1939-2024)

Allan Saxe, co-chair of my doctoral committee during my university studies passed away yesterday. He was born Jewish, but didn't follow that religion or any other. He was a saint. He worked for 54 years as a college professor and over the course of his life donated at least $1 million to various cha...

Re: Why Zen? A Pure Land and Zen comparison...

Ch'an is the precursor to Zen and many (most?) Ch'an practitioners do both. In fact I find Ch'an to be an almost Buddhayana type of Buddhism, finding them to be quite compatible to my interest in Theravada too.

It is from Udana 6.4 in the Pali Canon. The Jains have the exact same story in their Agamas. https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/ud/ud.6.04.than.html The moral of the story is that people have a variety of views, coming from just what they can "see" or feel, in this case. Others do...
