Nirvana
:anjali: :buddha1: "What is nirvana ?" I asked, rather naïvely to a Mahayana buddhist monk. I was confident, which I soon realized was hopelessly misplaced, that, going by how many times on multiple forums I've seen this question met with silence or awkward answers, I was going to upset th...

Re: Fusion breakthrough and Kardashev Level 1
Thanks for the replies forum denizens. Some, it seems, are pessimistic about this latest baby step science has made towards fusion energy. I join you in your doubts about how much of a step forward this is.

Re: Fusion breakthrough and Kardashev Level 1
 At the very least we can be sure that scientists have been working and working hard on the problem of nuclear fusion over the past 7 or so decades. Kudos to all those without whom this wouldn't have happened in my lifetime! Good job! :applause: No, this is wrong. We could have had thi...

The suffering are blessed. You're blessed brothers. Think of your suffering - it usually means something, something you'll have to investigate, as thoroughly as posssible mes amies.

Re: Indian history of "Sudden Enlightenment" found in Chan/Zen
the concept does exist as akrama mukti (sudden liberation) It's not a common concept but one used by him only, so it's nothing to do with Buddhism in India. The earliest one can probably be found in the Bahiya Sutta - where Bahiya woke up right there after hearing the Buddha's words. Also the strea...

Re: Indian history of "Sudden Enlightenment" found in Chan/Zen
Has this forum outgrown Wikipedia?
Here's somwthing I found https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subitism
The article doesn't actually mention any ancient Indian texts but the concept does exist as akrama mukti (sudden liberation)
Have a read, it's quite informative and also inspiring.

Re: What happened to me?
About 10 years ago, I got into Rinzai style Zen on my own. I lived in a small, isolated community at the time and nowhere near a Zen establishment to do formal practice. My only access was books, audiobooks and Zen forums. I had an assembly job and so it was easy to practice while at work. I was ve...

Re: Karma and non-self question: Whose karmic fruit am I?
The way I understand anatta (non-self) is from a whole-part point of view. Look at the letter A . A is A, but break it down into /, -, \ and now where is A ? This is what Buudhists are talking about by interdependence or interbeing in me humble opinion, truth seeker! Yes. The Buddha used the exampl...

Re: Why is the book "Tibetan Book of the Dead" so popular amongst non-Buddhists / beginners
It's good to have a manual that goes into as much detail as the Tibetan Book of the Dead for how to find one's way postmortem to the so-called Pure Land or pull of a return to samsara at the same/higher level you were before you passed on. The tome is a treasure trove of information on death & d...

Re: Can you do water offerings after work if you don't have time in the morning?
:woohoo: Amazing answers! I feel blessed to be in the company of such learned folk. Most water offerings I've seen are done in the morning and going by how monks in monasteries do it, the earlier the better. Lay folk do it later but still way before noon. I was hoping for a short exposition on the s...

Re: Grief and karma
Some really powerful insights offered by the OP. Muchas gracias, I'm in yer debt. Grief is a terrible feeling and why is evident from its nature. We suffer when a loved one departs from our world and there's truth in that pain which perhaps is our farewell gift to the dying and the dead. I've come a...

Re: Questions of confidence and what to do with it
Many confident people are (world) leaders. What makes them so (confident)? Most peeps who score low on confidence tests end up, absit iniuria, losers. How terrible!
