Re: As a Theravadan this "Tulku" tradition it seems to me very political
Scary. I suppose it is easy to fall into the trap of seeing these things through European eyes. And in Europe fundamentalist Christians are now a tiny minority. But clearly not elsewhere. I dunno: Poland, Hungary, Russia, Serbia, etc., seem to have a lot of them. And in Western Europe, it will grow...

Re: As a Theravadan this "Tulku" tradition it seems to me very political
Words like "Many" and "small" are subjective, hence I prefer to use objective figures or numbers like millions. Not just prefer to Christians but to any zealots that believe in "talking donkey, ants, birds or monkeys" :rolleye: Taking the objective fact that there are ...

Re: Non dual people
There is a difference between nondual (advaya) and nonduality (Advaita). In spanish they are just the adjective and the noun, but they dont carry variations on the meaning. Is it different in sanscrit? Yes, completely. The tā particle makes all the difference. There are many "nondual" thi...

Re: Non dual people
Those who have reached non dual awareness said to not suffer but able to feel pain. But what if they were being attacked or even tortured, can such people feel a lot of discomfort (obviously less than simple people)? I've heard a lot that such folks say they have zero suffering, but claim that pain...

Re: As a Theravadan this "Tulku" tradition it seems to me very political
After all, millions if not billions of people, actually believe in a literal talking snake. ??? I suspect that Kai Lord is referring to the serpent in the Garden Of Eden. Which the vast majority of Christians stopped taking literally more than 100 years or so, leaving it as the domain of the Americ...

Re: As a Theravadan this "Tulku" tradition it seems to me very political
Please name a Jataka tale with a telepathic talking rabbit as a main teaching lesson. Amelius wrote: You should also consider the numerous Jatakas and Avadanas. There are many stories in which the Bodhisattva or sometimes a Deva or even a Rishi takes rebirth as a human, or as an animal, as many dif...

Let’s imagine that we are an intelligent young person curious about the meaning of things and not interested in the explanations given in the Bible, so we turn to other traditions..we have heard of Tulkus in the Tibetan tradition so we turn to this thread to find out more hoping for a more rational ...

Re: As a Theravadan this "Tulku" tradition it seems to me very political
I like poetry as much as the next person. I don’t think that Dante’s Inferno describes an objective reality however. Which does not mean it isn’t “true”. Incidentally “transmigration” is a very poor and misleading translation of the actual Buddhist term ‘purnabhava’. Transmigration implies a soul, ...

Re: As a Theravadan this "Tulku" tradition it seems to me very political
Reincarnation or rebirth is an integral part of the Buddhist view of existence, including ordinary beings and Aryas or Noble ones. The style of these stories may not conform to the modern academic taste, but their essence reflects the reality that has been seen and experienced by the enlightened Ma...

Re: As a Theravadan this "Tulku" tradition it seems to me very political
Well, no. It is now well established that hatha yoga was borrowed by HIndus (See Jim Mallinson's research) from Vajrayāna Buddhism, What reference here? It doesn't seem to be in his "Roots of Yoga" although I haven't read it in detail. He does have some other publications and I remember y...

Malcolm, the mice in your house came from somewhere, and, unless they arrived by car, that somewhere was outside. ( House Mice ( Mus Musculus) and Field Mice ( Apodemus Sylvaticus) are very seperate species and very easy to tell apart. Both are found all over the world. Mus Musculus are grey/brown ...

Re: Should I save the rabbit or the falcon?
I was very sick recently and had to stare out my apartment window for many hours. Sometimes I saw a falcon soaring overhead. It was majestic. Sometimes I saw my neighbour play with her pet rabbits on the common lawns downstairs. They were very cute. What should I have done if I saw both the falcon ...

We had rats in the Dharma Center Shrine room. No one was too bothered but then someone on a short retreat reported it to the civic authority. We had no choice but to get a pest control company involved. No one felt happy about it, but there was no real choice.

Re: As a Theravadan this "Tulku" tradition it seems to me very political
Everyone dislikes the tulku system, yet most people including many exalted Bodhisattvas deeply desire to see their old master(s) back in flesh and even called out for them to return in their prayers. Hence the tradition continues........along with all the politics that go with it. The return of a b...

Re: Misbehavior within Tibetan communities
Be sure of the facts. If you are sure alert those who need to be alerted.
The Vajrayana is not an evangelical source of righteous indignation, but let’s not go to the other extreme and see it it as a hotbed of of 1960’s libertarianism. That does not make for a healthy community either.

Re: Crazy Wisdom Question
What is not quantifiable are the numbers of people that have been put off Buddhadharma because of the behaviours of some of its well known teachers. Or the number that had severe doubts and left. Of course it will be claimed that if they had the right karmic connection they would have not been so di...

Re: Crazy Wisdom Question
Why do some teachers have crazy wisdom and other don’t? Because non-crazies very potentially have not truly and deeply penetrated into the very Source of Mind and Experience! That is a very extreme claim which would end up in dismissing the realisation of most of the great teachers. At the time tha...
