Re: Amidaji and Rev. Cirlea going independent

Do you think it’s possible that some people come to it with a lot of background knowledge..sometimes over several generations, and then at some point take a different view to yours? Do you think that might happen? 🙂 I take your point about Cirlea. I think we are talking about a particular type of me...

Re: Continuity

When we stand on the shore the ocean waves appear to travel into the beach. In fact they simply rise and fall in the same place, and their energy fuels the next wave which then rises and falls. Nothing actually travels.

Re: Amidaji and Rev. Cirlea going independent

Nagarjuna would not agree of course.
What we are seeing here is the contrast between Shin as a separate development of Dharma that is self referencing, and Shin as part of mainstream Mahayana rather than being eastern or western.

Re: Is suffering intimately connected with the biological aging of cells?

Your ideas may be valuable to you. But they are not the Dharma of the Buddha. And I think that’s the most important thing that I can say to you...

Re: Amidaji and Rev. Cirlea going independent

What may also explain this are the homophobic and transphobic views he is promoting in his temple which are clearly not aligned with the current inclusive views of the Honganji-ha in Japan and the West : http://amida-ji-retreat-temple-romania.blogspot.com/2020/10/conditions-for-marriage-ceremonies-...

Re: Ian Stevenson and the Scientific Study of Reincarnation

I don’t think there IS a Buddhist view of reincarnation. The Buddhist doctrine of purnabhava is quite different from reincarnation. The main difference is in there being no atta which passes from one to another body.

Re: Is suffering intimately connected with the biological aging of cells?

“Tanha” literally means thirst. But as you will have gathered Buddhism uses it to cover all things we crave. Traditionally it is said to be of three kinds..some of that, three of these and five of those by the way is very much a product of the parent culture of Buddhism which tends to enumerate and ...

Re: The Great Abortion Debate

Well it’s an interesting perspective, but I have been taught that the Dharma is as it is irrespective of capacity, causes, and conditions. Rather than being adapted to the subjective experience Buddhadharma undermines them.

Re: The Great Abortion Debate

Which begs the question.
Can a view which is typical of thinking at a specific time and place ever be the eternal Dharma of The Buddhas?

Re: The Great Abortion Debate

Even if authentic in that sense it is still doubtful in tone. It reads like the product of a conservative mindset rather than the shaper of a conservative mindset.

Re: abortion sutra/real or...?

I mean, there's a sutra about menstrual blood and how women are punished for producing it..... Even if it's real, it's on you to decide the veracity really. Personally I don't think it passes the pramana test. A good point about many sutras of doubtful origin. Do they pass even a basic standard in ...

Re: Is suffering intimately connected with the biological aging of cells?

Buddha Shakyamuni told us that suffering and impermanence arise together. And that all compounded things, including our physical form, are impermanent. So the aging process and the suffering that results are hard wired into the samsaric world. If we imagine entities that have no physical form then t...

Re: abortion sutra/real or...?

It would probably be quite a simple matter to discover what scholars say about this sutra, it’s likely date, authorship and so on. What we need to ask is does it fit the general tone and sentiment that we would expect of Buddhavacana? Or does it seem to express the view of a particular group? There ...

Re: Shin "modernism"

I don’t think that anyone is claiming that this is the traditional teaching. However it’s not humanism either. Humanism is based on a completely secular and materialistic view. What modern schools of Shin are saying is that where.there is a way of going beyond birth and death which is accessible and...

Re: Shin "modernism"

My teacher says that Amida is an aspect of Mind and that the Pure Land can be accessed in this very second and is not a post-mortem “place”. This is I guess what is described as “modern” Shin teaching. It does not dismiss the supernatural. It says that dividing phenomena into natural and supernatura...
