Re: New-ish translation of Awakening of Faith?
Thanks very much. And to be clear, I'm not dismissing the accuracy of Suzuki's translation, just the antiquated prose.

New-ish translation of Awakening of Faith?
Has anyone read the 2019 Jorgenson/Lusthaus translation of the Awakening of Faith ? Any opinions? I've only ever tried to read the DT Suzuki translation from 1900, and I have to admit, the language was such a slog that I never finished it. I feel like it's a gap in my understanding that I'd like to ...

I'm not a huge Brad Warner fan, but I don't see why it would be surprising that a dharma teacher needs money.

Re: East Asian Buddhism - any what-is-what (each school) overview?
I don't remember anything like that from Zen, but my exposure was definitely not comprehensive. No, that's right, and it's maybe my biggest criticism of Zen in the West. I think we do a terrible job of introducing new practitioners to the foundations of Buddhist practice. In a lot of places, you ge...

Re: Moderation, bias, etc.
I think we're likely to get shut down here in a minute, but briefly: I don't see anyone's behavior here as "defensive," nor do I see anyone's behavior here exhibiting "bias." People have disagreed with you, but that's not the same thing as defensiveness. And holding a political o...

Re: Why are DharmaWheel and DhammaWheel separated?
There are EBT fundamentalists who reject not just Mahayana texts but later Theravadan commentaries like the Visuddhimagga, and who even scrutinize Pali Suttas to determine which were truly "early". It does about as much good to argue with them as with a young earth creationist. However, le...

Re: East Asian Buddhism - any what-is-what (each school) overview?
In any event, I hope Japanese Buddhism goes in the direction of less sectarianism and more cross pollination. I see this happening quite a bit in American Zen. I have several dharma siblings who have a Pure Land practice in addition to zazen. There are a number of Zen teachers who have studied with...

Re: Favourite Professional Sports
The hip-drop tackle, which was just banned, is different than tackling someone at hip level. In the hip-drop tackle, the defensive player wraps up the ball carrier and then drops/swivels their hips to the ground. The motion then causes the defensive player to roll over the offensive player's legs. I...

Re: East Asian Buddhism - any what-is-what (each school) overview?
I think a few of the original 6 Nara schools still exists - Kegon (Flower Garland centric) and Hosso (Yogacara) I think Ritsu still has a temple or two. IIRC they were forcibly combined with other schools during various political upheavals but, also IIRC, when things settled down they were allowed ...

Re: Moderation, bias, etc.
I will also say, as a card-carrying member of a socialist organization (really, they gave me a card), if you're railing against "woke" anything, and if the people here that you're pointing to as exemplars of leftist hatemongering are QQ, Ayu, and Kim--well, as QQ suggests, you might consid...

Re: Moderation, bias, etc.
I would again just suggest that, while I'm not privy to the reason behind any particular moderation decision, what you see on the surface is unlikely to represent anything close to the whole picture. And for what it's worth, I know for a fact that posts by left-wing members get pulled too: at least ...

Re: Favourite Professional Sports
Do you see the same rate of CTE in rugby? One of the criticisms of gridiron football is that the helmet incentivizes the use of the head as a weapon. This leads to a ton of subconcussive head injuries, which seem to add up to long-term brain damage. The NFL has tried to reduce hits to (headhunting) ...

Not sure, I think moderation cannot be questioned here. At least it's my experience. There's a subforum titled "Moderation Discussion". Here's JD's description of the purpose of the forum : This forum is for good-faith discussion on moderation, and not for gossip, scandal, etc. regarding ...

Re: Why are DharmaWheel and DhammaWheel separated?
re: moderation and tone, I am not a mod here, but I do help moderate one of the Buddhism subreddits. I'm willing to bet that for every post that you see that seems rude or confrontational, there's at least one that you haven't seen because it was removed. And for every post that's removed, there's s...

Thank you again for your reply, I do see the need for a teacher but I'm not in a place where I can easily find an appropriate teacher. I'd respectfully suggest that this isn't true. Even if you're not able to travel to meet a teacher once in a while (not everyone is), many teachers are available on...

Re: Favourite Sports
100%. Minor-league or college-level baseball is better than the major leagues in every respect bar skill. Going to a big-league game feels oppressive; minor-league games are actually, like, fun. Likewise we have a semi-pro soccer team in town. They're...not very good. But the games are always packed...

Favorite spectator sports are baseball and soccer, although it's been years since I watched a full 9-inning game of baseball. I used to play judo until I got too broken--Johnny, if you don't mind, I'm curious where you've been able to find judo matches to watch. I've never had much luck. Usually the...

Re: A specific historical claim about the Soto tradition
Are you asking whether I can confirm a Soto teacher's awakening, or whether awakening is a goal in Soto Zen? I believe I've been pretty clear in saying "no" as to the first--I'm not awakened--and I'm not interested in speculating. As to the second, as I have said consistently every time th...

Re: A specific historical claim about the Soto tradition
Things like this come up from time to time. First, I find it highly unlikely that the Sotoshu would use the term "kensho" to begin with: you can see this thread that Astus started for more detail, but the short version is that Dogen Zenji disliked the term specifically. Stepping away from ...
