Re: Risshū/Ritsu school

I'm interested in it too, because AFAIK it's the only school that retains a vinaya tradition. But unfortunately, I think there is only a single temple in Japan, that declares itself as a Ritsu temple: Toshodai-ji in Nara, since the other temples were converted into Shingon ones. In fact very few tem...

I have another question. Do laypeople only take the 5 lay vows or they take the 10 Bodhisattva Vows too? And do you have to take them both or can you “choose” which you prefer?

Thank you very much, Seishin!

Re: Tendai initiation

The ritual and etiquette for taking lay vows is down to the particular teacher/priest. The vows are, of course, standard. So, from what I understand: The ritual etiquette and gestures depends on the temple you attend. But the vows are the same in all Tendai temples. So,which are they? Taking refuge...

Tendai initiation

Hello everybody, I hope everything’s fine with you. Who could explain me how Tendai initiations (both lay and monastic) are carried out? I’ve already seen the major Tendai websites about this topic, but they didn’t seem to be fully comprehensive. Does the seat temple Enryakuji have an official ritua...

Don't worry yourself over not having an Udānavarga. I haven't read it either. I don't think it's popularly read nowadays anyways.

But doesn't that make you wonderfully curious? It does me.

Absolutely, but for now, I’m satisfied with Dhammapada.

Re: The Dhammapada in Mahayana

Thank you all for your replies. :thanks:

I've recently bought pali Dhammapada, instead of Udanavarga, because there's no a translated version of it available in my country (I live in Italy).

Pilgrimage to India nowadays

Hello everyone,

I was wondering, if the Japanese laymen or monks still go on pilgrimage to sacred Buddhist sites in India, such as Bodh Gaya or Lumbini, nowadays.

Do you know someone who has been on pilgrimage recently?

I'm not interested to do it at the moment. I'm just curious.

Thanks,
Kajmak

The Dhammapada in Mahayana

Hello everybody, I would like to know, what degree of importance the Dhammapada has in the Mahayana tradition, as it is a "Hinayana" scripture that diverges (I think, I have not read it yet) from the teachings of the "Great Vehicle". Is it considered irrelevant or partially important? As far as I kn...

Re: Goma ritual

Thank for all your answers.
What are those "sticks" they burn in the Goma ritual?
As far as I know it is practiced in Shugendō too, so what is the real meaning behind it? Is it just a tantric practice that we can't fully understand, unless we are an ordained priest?

Goma ritual

Good evening,

I was wondering, what the fire ritual in the Tendai tradition consist of?
Why has Tendai a esoteric ritual that comes from Shingon?
What does it represent?

Thank you :anjali:
