Re: Amidaji and Rev. Cirlea going independent

I have to agree that these are some what less defensible moves made by Cirlea and are not quite in line with the trend of separation between politics and religion in the Hongwanji which with Rennyo as expressed in his letter "On Norms of Conduct:" [D]o not slight the provincial military governors a...

Re: How are you staying active during the pandemic?

My local boxing gym is open for now, it’s able to meet the state safety requirements due to its size. Been doing it for 4 or 5 months now, best shape I’ve ever been in. I also have a home gym, had lots of equipment for a while, but didn’t set it all up until lockdown. Yeah, equipment is difficult t...

Re: How are you staying active during the pandemic?

Bodyweight exercises such as squats, lunges, pushups, planks, bicycle crunches, jumping jacks. Nerd Fitness is a site with good information (although a lot) for working out at home. Exercise circuits instead of doing one exercise over and over have been better for me also. I also find my exercises ...

Re: Time for new friends?

Hey guys, A couple of years ago I was really depressed. Since then I got treatment for the depression, went back to school, moved, stepped up my Buddhist practice, and got more involved my community. Since getting help I noticed something. Holy shi_t, most people in my circle are not happy! Not onl...

Re: Filing a police report against spouse for domestic violence as a Buddhist?

Hello my friends, I have a dilemma where I try to find words on how to act as a Buddhist when being exposed to domestic violence. There’s been a police report filed against the spouse, where I am struggling on the thought of it becoming a revengeful act doing so. I mean the spouse no harm, I only w...

Re: Being careful about worship

The title may be misleading but should one be careful to not see Buddha as a kind of God who brings us to enlightenment and nirvana if we follow him like leader? I read one youtube post that said something like, ''be your own teacher is the main thought of Buddha". I don't know what I am when it co...

Re: Starting meditation/sitting group/class at work?

My former employer had mindfulness in the morning. However, the employer was really toxic and had a high turn over. I now view workplace meditation with skepticism. Instead addressing issues like low wages, and abusive clients, they really made seem like it's the employee's responsibility to just d...

Advice- Getting a bigger place, MIL is kondoing and unloading unwanted stuff

So some background info. My mother has a hoarding problem. There were rooms that were totally unusable when I was growing up and she would rack up bills. I would sneak out old toys in my backpack to Goodwill because she would make me keep almost all of it if I asked. So naturally, I have an aversion ...

Re: Why not more Farms and Soup kitchens for Buddhist dharma centers, instead of money?

Most temples that I have been to ether grow their own food or lay people come in with a food donation for the sangha ( there is usually a free meal for everyone that attends.) However, since I live in Oregon we have very strict land use laws so it's not unusual to be in a midsize city and have farml...

Re: Punk?

Do I understand correctly that Tantra (not to mention Dzogchen ( + Dzen) ) was perceived by sutric contemporaries as something similar to punk music in the mid-70s? That is, as a kind of rabble in the eyes of the sutric establishment. There is a dharma punk group. Though they had a fall out with th...

Re: Feeling lack of community, advice?

I am on a similar journey, except I have plenty of communities nearby so I'm in an easier situation. I am part of a couple communities that help each other and share resources - I find there are many of them, but that may be due to living near a city. However, the ones I am part of are artist-centr...

Re: Feeling lack of community, advice?

Volunteer your time at a charity. Don’t forget to do the service with bodhicitta motivation and to dedicate the merit when you’re done. If it’s a christian charity just keep that on the down low. Win-win. Visited a nearby synagogue over the weekend. The Rabbi is cool with me doing volunteer work wi...

Re: Feeling lack of community, advice?

We're social creatures. If there are no local Dharma events locally, you could look for any online sanghas programmes of forums but you could also look to see what other non dharmic but still wholesome social meet-ups occur nearer to you. Have a look around - could be nature walks, hobby clubs and ...

Yeah, probably because it's not much of a choice. Back when I lived in a bigger city, I didn't have this problem even though I was alone even more than now.

Feeling lack of community, advice?

Hello,
I live about an hour away from my temple, so it feels like I lack community for most of the week. There are a few meetups, but not many since I am kinda in the middle on nowhere. Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do to feel more socially active around home that isn't a bar? Thanks!
