Re: Being healthier

It's almost 2022... well, for most of 2021 I did great. I lost about 70 pounds from a starting point in later 2020. I kept the added sugar cravings under control for most of 2021. Then, towards the end of the year, pressures and stresses and uncertainties got to me. I started eating way too much sug...

Re: Christianity and Buddhism the same?

Christianity and Buddhism the same? No. I presume the Buddha may have thought re-birth exists because he grew up in that part of the world (India, Hinduism) where they believe in that sort of thing. Had he grew up in Israel, he may have thought that a god exists. The Buddha directly awakened to the...

Re: Alpha waves

They don’t understand the difference between observing mindfully and grasping, there is no way someone with that limitation can clinically study mindfulness, they misunderstand the primary thing that distinguishes it, and apparently don’t even understand cognitive fusion, or it’s new to them. What ...

Re: HHDL on Satipatthana

Formal teachings on emptiness are absent from the sutta. That's true. It contains teachings on observing the arising and vanishing of phenomena. And it teaches one to abide independently and not cling to anything in the world. You can benefit from these as much as you wish.

Best wishes.

Re: Monastery/Ordination Help

I would also be curious if my assumption is right that it is best for an aspirant to look for a monastery here in the US instead of other countries. Is it much easier? Or can visa issue be resolved relatively easy with proper planning? All I can say is to find the place that allows you to be the be...

Re: HHDL on Satipatthana

In contrast, Mahayana is defined by the view that all dharmas are empty from the beginning precluding grasping altogether. There are teachings on emptiness in the Pali. Plenty of them. There are teachings on ultimate realities in the Abhidhamma literature in the Pali, and these are understood to be...

Here's the actual study referenced above.

Here's another example of this kind of research. I'm not sure if either of these studies are well designed or not:

Any neuroscientists here?

Alpha waves

Scientific research has shown that meditation (any kind?) produces alpha waves, which in turn have been associated with higher rates of mistake making. See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_wave#Mistake_prediction Question for people knowledgeable about neuroscience: How long would it take f...

to track down translations that exist Dear Sir, I wonder if you could help me track down this unique content (from a separate thread here) that is said to exist in the Agamas when compared to the Tipitaka: * EA includes past-life stories of the Buddha as a woman * EA makes explicit mention to the s...

HHDL on Satipatthana

His Holiness has given a teaching on the Maha Satipatthana Sutta at the request of various Theravada groups. The teachings in Day 2 focuses a bit more on the specifics of the text.

or has other suggestions? A true monk is someone who practices non-harm. See the Dhammapada: He is not a true monk who harms another, nor a true renunciate who oppresses others. Non-harm has initial and more developed levels. At the beginning, rules are followed in order to ensure not harming other...

Re: How do you meditate with tinnitus?

Tinnitus seems to make meditation impossible. Are you supposed to focus on the sound? Ignore it? It seems as if tinnitus makes meditation untenable...how are you supposed to concentrate on anything when there is a roaring, howling noise in your head? Go to an ENT if it's a chronic condition. I've h...

Re: Practice in ordinary world

As long as it doesn't fall into unwholesomeness, "idle" chatter can be very compassionate. What I mean is this: idle chatter itself is unwholesome. From the point of view of the person engaging in it, often without the aid of the dharma, they don't have any other option in mind; for them,...

Re: Trauma

On the other hand, being able to develop a "stable story" about the trauma-causing incident alone will assuredly not prevent surges of chaotic energy when triggered. This would seem to require working at deeper levels than the conceptual-ideational. However, since I am not a professional ...
