Re: Short-term taking of the 5 precepts.

Thanks for your advice! It may be a minor step, but it feels like a positive thing to know I'm consciously following the precepts- even if only temporarily. I have a friend from Thailand who I had only known forever as a monk. I haven’t seen him for many years, and last week saw another Thai monk, t...

Short-term taking of the 5 precepts.

Hi. Wondering whether people think vowing to uphold the precepts temporarily for a day/ a week etc would have any advantage at all? I haven't taken refuge or formally received the precepts, and not really ready to do so just now- eg: Drinking is a big part of bonding with my social circle, partner, ...

Re: The Platform Sutra on Pure Land practices.

"The land is pure when the mind is pure" type teachings come from sutras like the Vimalakirti Nirdesa Sutra. Teachings emphasizing the Pure Lands as somewhere you can be reborn come from the Pure Land Sutras, especially the Smaller and Larger Sukhavativyuha sutras and the Visualization Sutra. Both ...

The Platform Sutra on Pure Land practices.

Apologies if this has been covered in previous posts (I did try to check the search function) and sorry if I'm off track or rambling aimlessly. Signed up to this forum some months ago and somehow got side-tracked- but back reading more Buddhist texts recently while holed up hiding from the coronavir...

Re: Coronavirus outbreak in China

Offering prayers for China, for people around the world affected by the virus and especially for the inhabitants of Wuhan. Some of the stories of desperation and even suicide coming out of there are really pretty awful. Praying for the medical staff in Wuhan who doing such self-sacrificing work to c...

Re: Hello 大家好!

 Indeed there are a lot of young people including monastics quite interested in Theravada. Some, like several of my acquaintances, would go to Burma or Thailand for long-term strict meditation training. But, of course, except in regions like Yunnan as 如傑 mentions where there has been a hist...

Re: Hello 大家好!

Hello, The books 正信的佛教 by 圣严法师;成佛之道 by 印顺导师 are both available in English, as it happens, if that is easier to read; "Orthodox Chinese Buddhism" by Ven. Sheng-yen and "The Way to Buddhahood" by Ven. Yin-shun. Beyond reading though, consider a visit to Guangji Temple 广济寺 to the west, which is the he...

Re: Hello 大家好!

Is this a topic you're specifically done research on? I'd think an English language book on Chinese Theravada would be something that would be interesting and eye-opening for a lot of people. To some extent but not too extensive plus this was many years ago and done as a side interest. Having start...

Re: Hello 大家好!

Oh! Beijing is nice, as there surely are more historical places including Buddhist monasteries there to visit! The Buddhist ecosystem in Shanghai should not be quite different from other big cities: traditional, ritual-based Buddhism as the mainstream; middle-class and intellectuals obsessed with T...

Re: Hello 大家好!

...though I've never encountered any Chinese people interested in Theravada, which is interesting... Maybe, an answer lies in the possibility of exploring the great land beyond 北京? Actually, this link may interest you. I have been to Yúnnán's purported oldest (1,400 years old) Theravāda 景洪市...

Hello 大家好!

Hi, Very glad to be here! I'm a scotsman living in mainland China. I've never formally taken refuge, but Buddhism and meditation are both important parts of my life in trying to become a clearer thinker and better person. I'd love to learn more and make friends here. 也要问一下,这儿有中国人吗?我特别想认识更多中国佛教徒或者对佛教...
