Re: "I didn't ask to be born."

I hear this from people time to time. They're usually depressed, or prone to depression. Generally, they seem to think life is an imposition. It plays out in all kinds of sad and destructive ways. What's going on in the thoughts behind that statement? How does one get out of that view? Isn't this B...

Re: Buddhism and the Family

Someone once told me: one should have no family. Fellow seekers of dharma are your family.

Lifespan of a thought

:namaste: Everything is impermanent, but still they all last for certain duration. A mosquito only lives for a day or two. A turtle can live for even 200 years. Humans can live for 80 years or even more. But these are the lifespans of FORMS. What about names? These are the lifespans in the world of ...

Re: Object of Meditation

:namaste: Most of the time Buddhist literature and teachers ask you to focus on the breath. Is there any other meditation object that may be quite as effective in creating jhanic states like piti or sukha? :anjali: The thing with your breath is that it is an object that you always have with you, it...

Re: Rage

:namaste: We all have our crosses to bear. Mine is not greed or lust. It's rage. Almost bordering on spiteful hate. This rage inside scares me. :crying: Suddenly some memory comes up and triggers this anger. Or there could be some environmental trigger. Even though I don't lash out in the open, it ...

So confusing!

:namaste: As I stated in an earlier thread, I struggle with anger, but somehow I can control greed, lust, etc. Let's say I finally tame anger too. How come it is relatively easier to control emotions than it is to control thoughts? I am not saying it's easy as in piece of cake, obviously I am still ...

My addictions

:namaste: There is addiction, and there is addiction. Some people are addicted to alcohol or tobacco. I am addicted to watching 2 hours of TV/drinking four cups of coffee. Is my addiction a defilement or hindrance in Buddhism? Or is it just a harmless thing born of boredom? Do we distinguish between...

Whack-a-mole approach

:namaste:

Someone once told me Buddhist practice is NOT a whack-a-mole approach, but isn't that what it is?

Mindfulness ... you observe, something comes up, you observe, etc. Rinse, repeat.

It's piecemeal and seems to be never-ending.

What am I missing? :anjali:

Hi folks

:namaste:

Glad to be a part of this forum. I consider myself non-denominational, although I lean towards Nagarjuna's school of thought. Empty, empty, all is empty.

Hope to learn more and participate. :anjali:
