Re: Korean Zen Kwan Um, only center available.

I think it's a solid tradition and some very good people there, but like everywhere it varies. From what I recall, the scandal was that SS, while wearing monastic robes had a relationship with one of the disciples. When confronted about it, he admitted it. For some this might be a deal breaker, for ...

Re: Edgar here, why are you?

My intention was not to debate anything... And yet, since your arrival here, the only thing you have been doing is arguing and debating. ;) Really? On the other hand, I can tell my style is not welcome, at least by the most active moderators. My apologies for the harm caused and thank you all those...

Re: Edgar here, why are you?

From the first day I was introduced to Tibetan Buddhism I found myself drawn along a series of learning experiences in an unbroken chain that unfolded itself very naturally for 10 years in a predominantly Gelug stream. I was more or less isolated except for online classmates and occasional visits t...

If it is not about karma then what is it about? Luck? God? Fate? Chance? https://artsyats.files.wordpress.com/2017/01/a-wise-man-once-said-nothing-1472751961-1.jpg Do you believe in karma? Re: What a buddhist tradition did you choose and why?

Silence can also signal a lack of an answer (ie ignorance). I'd rather wear that label than the alternative. Actually in your short time on the forum so far, it seems like you've let your opinion be known quite strongly, albeit primarily through the questions you ask. You started life on the forum ...

Re: If an evil parent causes us to betray or become distracted from our faith, is detaching ourselves the best option?

Evil is a strong word, much overused. Maybe your parents are human beings just like you and me, who suffer and long for happiness, who make try to do the right thing and make mistakes?

I don't think the Buddha taught that people were evil, just ignorant and deluded.

Re: Edgar here, why are you?

Do you folks come to the forum, looking to awaken or is there another purpose? When I started reading the suttas and sutras, I had so many questions and ideas but no efficient way of getting answers and testing those ideas. I went to the predecessor of this forum and then to this forum when the for...

Re: What a buddhist tradition did you choose and why?

Sure. Like those gassed millions. But OK, I guess you can make karma mean pretty much anything you want. So I won't take the bait (any further). If it is not about karma then what is it about? Luck? Re: What a buddhist tradition did you choose and why?

Really? With all the scandals, you need to ask this? Yes. There is a difference between an apparently respectable Sangha and an actually respectable Sangha. Which one are you referring to? One rarely runs into serious (systematic) problems in an actually respectable Sangha, though one can fall prey...

Re: What a buddhist tradition did you choose and why?

That's pretty rotten luck, but I guess most would have no way of knowing. It really does not have anything to do with luck, it is basically all about karma. Sure. Like those gassed millions. But OK, I guess you can make karma mean pretty much anything you want. So I won't take the bait (any further...

Re: Should we be generous to the ungrateful?

Ungrateful people are perhaps the people most in need of generosity. Remember the old bishop in Les Miserables who houses and feeds the escaped convict Jean Valjean, who in turn, ends up stealing the church silver from him? When caught and brought by the police back to the bishop, the bishop lies a...

Re: What a buddhist tradition did you choose and why?

If I were a man dying of thirst in the desert, and through sheer amazing luck I had stumbled upon an oasis with a bunch of different drink stalls, I would not stop and spend ages comparing and evaluating the merits of freshly squeezed juice over coca-cola, though there may well be a fair few. First...

Thank you for the welcome, David.

I see that you run other Buddhist forums too. My first Buddhist home was Theravada and it is still a home, though attention has shifted somewhat.

Hello Edgar! And welcome to the forum. I am pretty new here myself as a registered member, but have been lurking and reading here for years. Also have been a Buddhist practicioner and academic for a few decades. I can only speak for myself, but I have found the forum to be largely helpful. There ar...

Re: Edgar here, why are you?

Thought a Buddhist forum would be about facing the delusion and ignorance head-on, but frankly, can't seem to make heads or tails of most threads. Do you folks come to the forum, looking to awaken or is there another purpose? Please forgive the human self. A good reminder. Charity starts at home, a...
