Re: Opening oneself to others

Somehow it may correspond, somehow it may not correspond. Difficult to point it out exactly where there may be correspondance between the two posts and where there may be talking at cross purposes. Just my conditioned perception. Maybe a lack of compassion on my side since I cannot 'feel' the feelin...

Re: Geshe Sopa's Work

There are 5 Volumes, right? I have read Vol. 1-3 a few years ago. Very detailed, good explanations and even better for deep study than the original. That's actually the main drawback if one seeks a more quick overview on the path... but then even the original may be too elaborate.

Re: Empowerments

I have googled for you and voila:
An empowerment is a ritual in Vajrayana which initiates a student into a particular tantric deity practice.

Re: I Would Love A Study Partner

Thanks for all the input. I'm now thinking of starting an online course something like this: https://www.ligminchalearning.com/ourcourses/ Would anyone else like to participate in a course together? If you attend a course there will be other participants attending this course 'together', don't you ...

.... But they did, and their word is taken as literal truth in Vedanta. That's strange and totally alien to my native culture. That's why buddhism appears more familiar in the sphere of my experience.. It's strange and quite alien to me also ... although I did grow up with something similar in Cath...

Re: Brahman and Atman in Kagyu?

‘Experience’ is a transitive verb, i.e. ‘I experience it’. So experience of anything is subtly dualistic. Experience actually strengthens the sense of self - ‘I have had this eexperience’ - and also of craving - ‘that is an experience I want to have’. ... To help make sense of that, consider the de...

Re: In the footsteps of Tilopa and Naropa and Shantideva

The old tantrics preferrred to work amongst scum and whores. Well, so do I. I know only losers, drug abusers and bully victims. I don't say this to brag, but what do you think? The deepest suffering is where we find peace and love. But it's tough. That's not my cup of tea but keep on going if it's ...

Re: Brahman and Atman in Kagyu?

what can neither be experienced nor inferred is truly unknowable The premise in Buddhism is that the Ultimate can be experienced. Therefore it’s not a mystery—except to those that haven’t had the experience. Depends on how Kagyu buddhism defines "experience" ... other buddhisms may not ag...

Re: Brahman and Atman in Kagyu?

Then that is another difference between Buddhism and Vedanta, because what can neither be experienced nor inferred is truly unknowable and as such it is like being in love with a woman one has never known (as in the Potthapada Sutta), a meaningless idea. I wouldn't call an idea meaningless that see...

You are being closed minded and arrogant, this why religions get a bad reputation, you become so prejudiced toward other people and their genuine experiences. Don't upset. All troubles in the world originate from people expounding their genuine experiences without being asked and other people not r...

:namaste: Everything is impermanent, but still they all last for certain duration. From my empirical perspective the prerequisite for conceiving of duration is the imputation of a substance, essence or substratum. But since the world usually does not bother about that to view it your way is ok. Wha...

Re: I Would Love A Study Partner

Good idea! If you start a study group to work through Buddhist scriptures, you should ideally have an expert guide/consultant, someone you trust to help you understand the texts as they were meant to be understood. If not, you run the risk of: https://www.startshining.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11...

When dependent on external conditions but in doubt then external conditions shouldn't be changed. Hope cannot replace certainty. Right decisions dawn but cannot be forced.

Re: Laymen who attain arhantship must enter the Order or attain parinirvana

I think that a layman may attain arhantship only in a strongly supportive environment which then would prevent the early death of such an individual. I recall a sutta in which a person after having been taught by the Buddha attains arhatship (?) - 'released from effluents through lack of clinging/su...
