Enlightenment (continued)

Mod note: This topic has been split from here: https://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?p=447444#p447444 How do you attain enlightenment in Mahayana Buddhism? By being a Bodhisattva, and waiting for everyone else to attain Enlightenment first . https://www.lionsroar.com/the-bodhisattva/ I ...

Re: Why is reincarnation "bad"? (split)

If we wanna get nit picky, Buddhism does not teach reincarnation but rebirth. The reason to end the cycle is just that, to end the cycle of dissatisfaction that characterizes samsaric existence. Does rebirth mean being born in a womb? Or is that reincarnation? Just thinking on the keyboard and ... ...

Re: The Great Debate on Quitting Smoking

This forum is childish. I question whether it is a real Buddhist forum. Grow a brain everyone or wake up. Oh. well, sorry. I was trying to be helpful, and thoughtful, if and/or when I grow a brain I'll try to be more effective. How can I make it up to you? I am the one who needs to grow a brain :co...

Re: The Great Debate on Quitting Smoking

Thank you. Yes I feel "you have to really want to quit" or else your "fooling yourself" should be replaced with 'you'll quit when your ready'. :applause: Better yet, quit when your ready. But perhaps, as you said there is some truth to the former statement. I'm reading Quit and ...

Re: The Great Debate on Quitting Smoking

This notion that I have to either get sick of smoking and want to quit or really really want to quit I do not agree that I am fooling myself. This seems to only bring me down. Yes I seem to have a diagnosis of psychosis and schizophrenia, and have this cigarette addiction. So yes it is a dual diagno...

Re: The Great Debate on Quitting Smoking

Per your June 17 2023 post, you are carrying a dual diagnosis, so that really throws off non-professional, albeit empathetic and well-intentioned (but demonstrably futile), advice from people you have never met, about how they quit, and how you should try to do the same. Even if their use was comor...

Re: The Great Debate on Quitting Smoking

Do you want to quit? Or do you just think you should quit? Because if you aren't committed to quitting, if you aren't sick and tired of smoking, sucking in hydrogen cyanide, coughing up stuff, hacking and gagging in the morning, having breath that stinks and clothes that reek of smoke, etc, you WIL...

Re: The Great Debate on Quitting Smoking

sorry to double post but, yes saying I need to stop writing about it and simply stop was not offensive, I think I just was lost in thought and took it that way. I will stop talking about it in person is my plan. Smoking is a killer. :techproblem: I should be smoking outside my place, and working on ...

Re: The Great Debate on Quitting Smoking

Yes absolutely I started this topic along time ago and have had wonderful advice/real world stories/down to earth stuff to say and had not much constructive to say. Telling someone off who was being real with me was incorrect and wrong. I have decided to just stop talking about my smoking habi...

No. You don't need to tell yourself anything. You need to stop writing about it and simply stop.

No, I don't. Mind your own business.

Re: The Great Debate on Quitting Smoking

Well I've been smoking about 2 20 packs everyday. The question is, how can I do my best at quitting? Alan Carr's easy way is for people who are smart (which I consider myself smart when I'm not in the grips of my mental illness or medicated state" so to s peak. Really how can I do my best. I li...

Re: Samatha Breath

As long as you keep returning to watching the breath, you are meditating. I "THINK" I disagree with this a little bit. I think as long as you keep returning to the breath, you are focusing. I would in that case be building concentration. Just a thought. Meditation is more of a mental/psyc...

Re: Samatha Breath

I think that "Mindfulness Bliss and Beyond" says to pick a sort of imaginary spot under the nose if you have trouble feeling sensations on the nose and focus on it sort of. The point of breath meditation is simply to focus the mind do that it isn’t wandering all over thinking about past a...

Samatha Breath

I am trying to re-learn to meditate, from which I learned mostly from books. When I meditate on the breath, should I pick a spot where I feel the breathe, and notice the sensations of the breath when going in and out? Should I just train to be aware of what the breath is doing in the moment? ... All...
