The Secret

Postby SamKR » Mon Aug 09, 2010 11:11 pm

Hello everybody,

I was just wondering what you think about Rhonda Byrne's best-selling 2006 book and the movie The Secret.: http://www.thesecret.tv/movie/trailer.html
Is it somehow compatible with Buddhism?

From that website, looks like a kind of new-agey thing to me.

Need I roll my eyes again? Why is there an influx of questions on DhammaWheel about new-age nonsense recently?

isn't the secret just the power of positive thinking? i guess that on it's own isn't so bad, i guess it's helpful to some bored housewives and guys with ponytails but to those on the Buddha's path what really would be the point? we already have right resolve and right thought we don't need some new age movie to mystify it for us.

Hi Sam

Google Rhonda Byrnes and you should come across a number of investigative articles into the origin of the secret and her previous working life working in public affairs, marketing and television. Since the secret was published, Byrnes has also been involved in a protracted legal battle with a former colleague who claims that she plagiarised his work. Its the worst form of grasping new-age fads designed purely to make money for the author. Count yourself very fortunate that you have encountered the three jewels and you have an opportunity to participate in pariyatti and bhavana which will lead you to liberation.

Learn this from the waters:
in mountain clefts and chasms,
loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.

I think that 'The Secret' and all of its similar schools of thought are the epitome of arrogance. They spring from a closed, privileged, Western-developed world view. I find it a little sickening, really, to think that people are actively wishing for 40 inch plasma televisions, and when (if) they acquire said television they attribute it to the fact that they wanted it. Guess all of those starving children in Africa just don't want that food badly enough, huh? Arrogance.
