Are letting go and accepting the same thing?

Postby jackson » Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:21 pm

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if letting go and accepting are basically the same thing, and also I'm wondering what the pali term for letting go is. Is there more to letting go than just accepting?
Thanks for your replies!

Maybe.

How do you see them?

For me :
letting go = stop ruminating
accepting = not wanting things to be different.

Accepting is a little stronger than letting go, because it always implies equanimity when we think of the subject. Sometime, letting go is just stopping worrying by thinking of something else (this is not permanent because if we start to re-think of the initial subject, worryness can arise again).
Please don't hesitate to correct my english if you feel to

To paraphrase the Buddha

When one is comes into contact with a feeling, one does not chase after it if it is pleasing, advert from it if it is displeasing or remain ignorant of it if it is neither pleasant -nor-painful

this is letting go as it stops the arising of craving, grasping, dukkha
Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken

To me acceptance is in relation to an object or experience, to accept there has to be something to accept.

Letting go is more general, it starts internally by the letting go of my sense of self and the relinquishment of the maintenance of all the rigmarole that surrounds that.

I think Paññāsikhara is correct about the lack this term in Pali, it seems a modern western expression, though one notable teacher who used it a lot was Ajahn Chah I'd be interested in finding out the Thai phrase he used that was translated as "let go".

Thanks for your replies!
They've been very helpful and are greatly appreciated. Unfortunately the first link you provided didn't work Cooran, but I enjoyed the other two!
Thanks again,
Jackson
