The Dhamma of the Fare-Evader

Postby Viriya » Wed Sep 29, 2010 12:33 am

I share in the hope you'll get a laugh out of it...
I was half-listening to the radio in the car the other day and just caught the words that the Queensland Government had declared a 'War on Theravadas'.

Took me 15 minutes to work out that it was in fact, a 'war on fare-evaders', not the peace-loving Buddhist Way of the Elders. (=

Moral of the story: Theravada=/=fare evader. (=

I'm not very good at right speech, although I try, so please guide and correct me if necessary so I don't make bad kamma for myself and cause others to be annoyed. (=

:jumping:
He turns his mind away from those phenomena, and having done so, inclines his mind to the property of deathlessness: 'This is peace, this is exquisite — the resolution of all fabrications; the relinquishment of all acquisitions; the ending of craving; dispassion; cessation; Unbinding.'
(Jhana Sutta - Thanissaro Bhikkhu translation)

What's a fair-evader?

It most commonly refers to people that deliberately avoid payment when riding trains and subways.

Also, if there is an epidemic of "fare evasion," it may be that the fares are too high.

Public transportation is meant to serve the poor, although governments sometimes abuse it, just as with the sales tax, as a way to tax the the poor in order to subsidize the rich. Because the poor cannot afford cars and auto insurance, public transportation is the only way they can get around. If the fares are too high, it is more likely that greed will cause people to jump gates or people may simply not be able to afford the fare.

Sorry for the spelling slip-up, Individual. I had the Sigalovada Sutta on my mind, thinking about fair-evasion. ^^ I did mean fare-evasion.

It's problematic in Queensland because we have a new swipe card system in the Brisbane/Gold Coast area, which makes it easier to walk on and walk off without paying.

For Individual, the full list of prices for public transport where I live:
http://www.translink.com.au/currentfares.php

Very reasonable with a Go-Card, in my opinion. And I am dirt-poor. (=

I don't want to be obtuse (and I'm sorry if I'm micromanaging or metadiscussing or any other buzz-word for nitpicking --- my intention isn't to be annoying it's just to clarify something)... but how does Theravada sound like Fare-Evader?

I thought Theravada was pronounced like this:

Tear A Vard Ah

Tear (like what you do to paper, another word for 'rip'), A (you know that one), Vard (rhyming with 'lard'), ah (you know that one too).

Am I wrong? Have I been pronouncing Theravada wrong for so long or is there an accent where Theravada sounds like Fare-Evader?

I'm lost :embarassed: Sorryyyyyyyyyyyy
