To study is to know the texts,
To practice is to know your defilements,
To attain the goal is to know and let go.

Hi Bodom,

That's very nice, but some veterinarians believing that cats purr when they're happy is not exactly what I was asking for, which is where is this research that shows cats' purring has beneficial effects on the human body? :D

Then the Blessed One, picking up a tiny bit of dust with the tip of his fingernail, said to the monk, "There isn't even this much form...feeling...
perception...fabrications...consciousness that is constant, lasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will stay just as it is as long as eternity."

Hi Perrow,

Anguli Mala was a person in the time of Buddha who killed 999 people in the same life in which he later achieved full enlightenment.

If you are worried that puss is forever doomed because s/he kills other creatures this shows us that it is not so.
(Of course, it doesn't mean killing is OK).

metta to you and metta to puss

It seems both absurd and ignorant to me to suggest that an obligate carnivore is practicing unwholesome kamma by hunting food, as evolution programmed them to do instinctively. As far as volitional behavior goes, some cats form caring relationships and practice wholesome behaviors, if it's in their nature. And some cats are evil and hateful little demons. Wide variety of personalities, just like humans. The life of a stray animal is hard.

Humans and other omnivores are fortunate to be able to choose their proteins. personally, I wish I didn't have to eat at all--it's an inconvenience, and I dislike the expense too, but well, there you go. :P

Perrow, don't restrain your cat.

First, due the their physiology, cats must eat meat. So it is in their nature to be predators. Seconds, a cat's brain is about the size of a walnut. Cats don't have the mental capacity to understand that there may be a different way to live. That's what makes human birth so precious. We have the brain capacity to transcend our animal natures.

I see several people have posted that because cats must eat meat, they should not be prevented from killing animals. But as a pet, there is no need for the cat to kill its own food as it would have to in the wild.

I hadn't ever thought about this before, but if you think about the kamma of killing, from a Buddhist perspective wouldn't it be better for the cat's kamma to provide meat for it and not let it kill animals (to the extent possible--you can't watch it every moment). Wouldn't this help reduce its accumulation of negative kamma and thus be a wholesome course of action?
