How the internet makes us stupid.

Postby Ben » Fri Sep 10, 2010 3:34 am

“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

Sounds like there's truth there. Researchers said similar things about television, and i think there was truth there as well. In the US and many of the "developed" countries there is increased concern with children who have trouble concentrating in schools. Teachers and psychiatrists call this Attention Deficit Disorder, and treat it with medications.

I remember when I was younger I'd spend hours with books, or drawing. Skill development requires concentration and daily long term engagement, with a piano, car engine, books, painting, ballet practice, etc. I found that a lot of doctors here in Japan had mastered a musical instrument when younger. I think that patience and perseverance- concentration and effort - are learned this way, naturally. This can be a positive outcome of the arts and hobbies...

Two hundred years ago people had to focus on creative projects, built their own homes, sewed their own clothes, carved furniture, went fishing... Now we go shopping.

There's definitely a down-side to modern life.
"As Buddhists, we should aim to develop relationships that are not predominated by grasping and clinging. Our relationships should be characterised by the brahmaviharas of metta (loving kindness), mudita (sympathetic joy), karuna (compassion), and upekkha (equanimity)."

Actually it wasn't that long ago, Chris! In the 1920s, many people lived in agrarian communities without electricity and modern conveniences.
There is a move back towards sustainable living, but I think for many adherents, its a lifestyle choice that is quickly shed when kids and other responsibilities come along.
I think Carr's argument has a lot of merit. Perhaps it was 20 years ago when someone told me that the average person was exposed to 1,500 advertising messages every day. With the advent of the internet, one's attention is partitioned, divided an dragged by distractions and messages orders of magnitude greater than it was pre-internet. I'm not a psychologist so I would hazard to say that the internet causes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but I think it doesn't help any of us to maintain single-pointed concentrated awareness.
kind regards

Ben

Maybe some subconscious awareness of the problem is driving the growth of meditation, by way of compensation, in the West.

I don't think the internet makes us stupid....or smart...or anything else......probably all it does is to reveal something about ourselves....the thing about the internet is that anyone regardless of intellectual abilitiles or emotional soundness can be heard far and wide or find something to while away the hours in whatever way they are so inclined....thus alot of uninspired people are found on the web and these are people that you would never have found in a library (for example) before the internet so its unlikely that you will find them in a library now either or looking for in depth knowledge on the internet...however....alot of people who spent alot of time in the library before the internet are now spending alot of time now on the internet and they are still pursuing the broad range of knowledge and information that they pursued before....but of course these are and have always been a tiny minority........

When my son and I first heard about the Internet we said "Hooray, now nobody will have to be stupid anymore--all the world's information will be online."

Boy were we wrong. :computerproblem:

Yeah, and unfortunately, if people find it on the web, it's AUTHORITATIVE. :sage: There's stuff even on Wikipedia so wrong it might as well have been made up by fiction writers.

internet is great, the reason that we can be here, for years i was thinking i wish that i was living in 60, but the only reason that i change my mind is internet, although it makes me lazy, cause to not remember the simplest things in my job, because i can access them via internet!

But whoever walking, standing, sitting, or lying down overcomes thought, delighting in the stilling of thought: he's capable, a monk like this, of touching superlative self-awakening. § 110. {Iti 4.11; Iti 115}
