DC webcasts and Ubuntu 11.10

Post by treehuggingoctopus »

So I've finally mellowed enough to ditch evil Windows go full Ubuntu. The learning curve is slightly steeper than I thought it'd be, but - slowly, slowly - I seem to be adapting, and more or less cope reasonably well.

With some exceptions, that is. Like for instance, Rinpoche's webcasts :-(. The Friday Sang utterly defeated me - neither the in-built player nor VLC could play it, and frankly I'm at a loss what to do. Any suggestions? What software do you use? All help will be grrrreatly appreciated.

No idea if it can help, but for the Sang & Serkyem, using Mozilla Firefox, I just went to http://www.shangshunginstitute.net/webcast/video.php and retransmission was "perfect", better than last transmissions, no interruptions. May be because they were less connections than for a teaching ?

I'm not 100% if the correct codec is in here, but it's worth a shot.

Sorry, it's been awhile since I've used ubuntu. I hope one of these works for you.

Can you play videos on youtube for example?
If not then you need to install flash player.
If you still cant play videos you can try disableing "hardaware acceleration"from within the flash player itself.

You can install the flash player via the ubuntu software center. You will have to install the flash plugin aswell...

I use Ubuntu 11.10 but I don't access the webcasts. If they play in a normal webrowser, there shouldn't be any problems if you've installed all the codecs.

I'd suggest going to the software center and installing the 'Ubuntu restricted extras' package which should have all the codecs you need. If that doesn't work, come back

BTW, Ubuntu is massively more awesome that Windows, good move!

And and it's still nothing. Nada, neant, rien.

Had done that as soon as I'd installed Ubuntu.

Installed pretty much everything here. Still nothing.

Interestingly, youtube is the only thing that plays - vimeo won't work, and the DC default webcast player looks like a bad cubist/constructivist painting. Flash I've got, will try to disable the bleeding harware acceleration in a moment.

Sorry it's still not working for you :consoling:

Make sure you have installed the 'W32codecs' package from medibuntu

If that doesn't work, I suggest searching here:

Maybe you could post a request for support too, they are a very helpful community

Finally, at the long last, the problem's solved.

Huh, was it tough - but the solution proved very simple, of course. There's a Firefox add-on devoted to the optimalization of Flash under Linux. You download it, run it, restart the computer and, lo and behold, you can watch Rinpoche's webcasts again!

Thanks to all of you for help :-)
